Be gentle, I"m new here. Recently, I bought a Columbian Steyr sporter 7X57 with a sweet Fagen checkered stock, Timney trigger and a Simmons 2-10 scope. The barrel has been cut down, sights removed, Ser. #34-161 on both barrel and receiver, bolt has been polished, no model # but Steyr-Solothurn Waffen A.G. Solothurn is in north central Switzerland. Bore has nice rifling and a good shooter. Help me fill in the blanks, what model is it and what is it worth?

That sounds like the 1912 model, made by Steyr in Austria. It`s a standard `98 Mauser action, and a good one IMHO. It`s probably throughted for the old 175gr roundnose FMJ round so don`t be disapointed if it doesn`t like lighter bullets. Mine wont shoot anything lighter than the 160gr Mag-Tips. Hornady sells a 175gr roundnose softpoint that will fill the bill also. A lot of these were Arsenal converted to .308 and restamped model 1912-61. HTH

Thanks

I wondered why I danced around the bullseye at 100 yds with some Federal Premium 140 grain cartridges. What is IMHO and where can I dig up more info on this rifle? Thanks again for the help.

IMHO = In My Humble Opinion

You may want to try www.gunboards.com under the scetion for Military rifles. There may even be a specific Steyr section, although I don't recall seeing one.

BE as cautious there as you were here. Many on gunboards as well as the high road frown on sporteizing fine military weapons, but since you purchased it that way they may go a little easier on you.

Hope you find what your looking for.

I find it strange that others would try to appoint themselves the guardians of someone else's property.

It's no one's business what anyone does with their own firearms, and to think it is your business is totally irrational.

I'm afraid I wouldn't be very patient with someone telling me what I "should, ought, and must" do with MY firearms. :fire: :cuss:
