My area of ny just opened to rifle this season so im New to the rifle game. My go to deer gun has always been some form of 12ga. Right now I have a 870 and 935 that I shoot sabots out of. My question is what cal rifle would compare to the kick of them big bore "punkin chuckers"?

My 37H&H kicks like a 12ga with heavy field loads but not nearly as bad as a 12 with heavy slugs, but then it does weigh 9.5 lbs. If you can shoot a 12ga with heavy slugs or mag loads you can shoot pretty much any rifle out there. The most painful firearm I owned was my Mossburg 590 with 3" slugs...

Something in 308 would probably work just fine for your area. But that is just a guess on my part.

I bought a .270 this year but its just a thought of what I know I can handle if I do look for a big boy gun such as a .45-70, .338 or .375 it may just be for the fun of having and shooting but maybe the off chance of a Kodiak dream hunt. Im used to paying $3 a shot for the sabots so ammo cost isn't really a factor and im looking to reload so the thump is the major factor

From a 7-8 lb shotgun most 2 3/4" slugs will be in the 25-30 ft lb of recoil range. About the same as a 300 win mag from the same weight rifle. The 3" and 3.5" slugs are well into the elephant gun recoil range and more than I want.

Oh my... depending on the weight of the missle your launching and the weight of the rifle, the answer could be several of the big magnums, most of the big bores, et cetra.

If you can handle a 12ga spittin slugs, i bet you'll not think twice about any of the above mentioned!

The only gun ive shot that i really didn't like the recoil was a Mossberg835 with 3.5" Turkey load.I already had a 935 so that 835 hit the road quick

If it were me I'd just get a good 243 or 308. I know New York is hard to get ammo in also. A friend lives up NW of Syracuse. They use a 270 and 243. Gotta be wary of the thick stuff and new rifle hunters. That scares me as bad as the youth hunt here lol

A .270 or .308 will indeed do all you need, but if you just like recoil, the .458 Win Mag is fun, although not as brutal as some 3" slugs in light shotguns.
