Does anyone besides me enjoy shooting guns in steel challenge that others consider completely inappropriate? One of the funnest times I've ever had at a match was when I pulled out my bone stock iron sighted 10-22 compact on smoke and hope and heard someone snicker " Wal-mart 10-22". I get more joy out of being competitive with guns that others would consider "not competitive". Am I the only one. I own zero competition only guns.

I love shooting USPSA and IDPA with a revolver. Beating the filthy bottom feeders with the noble round gun, much fun. :D
I'm with you there. All my handguns are revolvers now. Winning rimfire pistol in steel challenge with a revolver is like the ultimate challenge. I used to shoot autos some, but have always preferred revolvers. At 59 years old I'm not going to win the world speed shooting championship. Might as well shoot what I like and have some fun.

Well, I have to say, I love my competition guns:

1905 Marlin 1892 22lr
@1880 1871 Mauser Pattern 9.5x47R
RB Replica 45-70
1901 1898 Krag Jorgensen

2x S&W No 3 Schofield revolvers 45LC (Uberti)
Marlin 1894 45LC
Stoeger Coach gun 20ga (I actually don’t love this gun; it’s pretty much crap)

I shoot RFPO with both guns and will shoot RFPI with the Black Mamba this Sunday.
Wish I would be shooting this weekend. Match will be closed due to the winter storms. My rfpo gun is a S&W 3 inch barreled model 63 8 shot. I shot it in rfpi up until a couple of months ago. Getting old and blind. My arms just aren't even close to long enough any more. My buddy made me a custom side mount for my optic.

I have done that before. I still like winning but have done things like use odd firearms and if a 2nd gun is allowed, our club allows a 2nd gun to be shot, at additional cost and not for score, I’ll shoot an odd ball or even get out a left holster, swap sides with mag holders and shoot weak hand.

One of the things I learned early on is how well you can do with very plain guns. My thinking is that " if you aren't finishing in the top 20% of your division, the gun probably isn't the problem." That stock iron sighted 10-22 that was snickered at when I unbagged it on smoke and hope, not only won the stage overall, it won the match overall in a field of 70 competitors. Just made it that much more fun....its the only rfri gun I've ever owned. People just can't seem to grasp it when you beat their expensive optical sighted, comped "race rifle" with your iron sighted stock gun.

I shot the CMP rimfire sporter game with a 10-22 against some guys who regularly beat me with their CZ 457 bolt guns until last year's Covid cancel. But I usually came in 1-2 against 10-15 other shooters shooting various guns including other CZ's.
I've had my 10-22 since 1987 or so and futzed around with any little trick that came down the pike. The best modifications I've made was to replace the mag release, polish the sear, free float the skinny barrel, shim the receiver (so your sling doesn't affect PoA) and shorten the bolt face. In that order.
I don't recommend shortening the bolt face yourself unless you are very patient and careful. Unless your modified bolt hits the barrel breech square/flat when you chamber a round, you haven't improved anything. Or the sear polish, for that matter as you can't afford misfires or doubles.
Those mods changed this 10-22 from a 3" gun at 50yds prone to a less than 2" gun. The only after market addition was the magazine release which requires no modification to the gun.
Being able to shoot 2" offhand at 25 yds will be a big plus.

I'll handy cap myself if my skills are above my competitors too much.

Run a slow 1911 in Limited.
Run a Glock 23 in production steel. Etc.

My favorite is when those ''guys that whine about race guns'' show up. We love crushing those guys with equipment far worse than theirs. Might even see some plastic Glock sights come out for that. Lol.

"Hey watch, they're falling down the order.''
"Any minute now they'll switch to complaining about race belts and holsters.''
"Lets carry our reload mags in our pockets.''
"Lol.''

I decided to take my C-More off my 617 and shoot it for the next few weeks in RFPI (Rimfire Pistol Iron) category for Steel Challenge.

Today I fired 300 rounds of Federal BYOB and Remington Golden bullets and only had 2 Failure To Fires so I'm pretty happy. I have a new mainspring on order and that will take care of the FTFs.

I shoot better with my revolvers that I do with my Autos so I'm hoping to get into a higher class. This is a small, only 5 stage match, but if I do well I'll shoot the full SC Match next weekend.

I regularly win a pistol match with stock pistols. One year I won with a cheap Sigma with a little trigger help. Some guys show up with comped race guns and what not. I was told I wasn't allowed to win two years in a row. Lol. I reminded them that last years match was cancelled for covid.

As a follow up, I shot that match. I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery and have arthritis. I came in second. I am very happy that I shot well for me. The guy that one was a real shooter with a nice target 1911. Clearly a better shot than I am. It may be my last match due to Arthritis.

Ruger Redhawk 44. 4.2" bbl. HKS Speedloaders in a dump pouch. I compete, but I'm not competitive.

I ran a "Wal Mart 22" once. I quickly learned what a pos 10-22s are.

When it came time for my old NRA Action club to replace their falling plates, I shot the final match with them using full-house .44 Magnum loads. I irritated a lot of people that day - especially the one guy I still outscored! :D

the Idea of "Match/competition use only" is not a concept that I am willing to apply to guns that I own. If i don't find it useful or fun to shoot outside of competition, I don't see any reason to have it to begin with. of course i'm also one of those guys that will do crap like show up to a tactical 2-gun match with a Garand and a GI-style 1911, or shoot a silhouette match with a Savage built No.4 Enfield (and place middle of the pack using irons)

I have shot matches with odd balls but one of the things I enjoy about competing is winning.

So while I might take a camp carbine to a PCC match, I have done things that give it advantages it didn’t have.

Like the ability to have your finger on the safety while it’s outside the trigger guard.

A Mag release that easier to hit with speed.

Ability to use Glock mags.

In racing, we would have called it a sleeper. Something better suited for the job than it would appear at first glance.

That's definitely a sleeper man....... I once shot a steel match with a Charter Bulldog Pug. The reactions were just priceless.... It actually made it through the match. I did not win.....
