Components for cartridges you don’t shoot?

I'm good on presses for now, I need to get the shed organized and get it finished off, insulated and the two interior walls finished up.
Come spring I need to buy a battery operated clay pigeon thrower and a 12 gauge reloading set up.
Are you going to the WaGuns New Years Day Shoot?
wish I could, I LOVE CLAY SHOOTING! just a few more years and I can do stuff. On Children Lock down

Negative, I only buy components for cartridges I already have or plan to get in the immediate future.

Biggest reason I've never gotten a 44mag lever action was there were no large pistol primers about. When they started showing up on shelves again this last year I almost elected to start buying some bricks to have. Either I'd get into 44 mag to add to 357, 30-30, 38-55 and 45-70 or maybe a buddy could use them. I'm still kind of hoping maybe one day somebody will make small pocket 44mag brass (Starline? Please?) and I'd never have to worry about LPs.

So I decided against it because I didn't want to be *that* guy (no insult intended at you, OP), the one that will grab a brick of anything just because it's there and the price is decent. I'd rather leave it for someone who's looking for it and could use it. Same reason why I left LRMs on the shelf at Sportsmans on more than 2 occasions, I just don't need them.

Closer to the OP's prompt is concerning brass: I spoil myself now that I know for certain I'm a handloader in it for the long haul and only buy Starline brass, so buying some for a cartridge I don't have and am not actively trying to get into is unthinkable to me.

I will certainly collect any worthwhile components or ammo or accessories I am offered but I generally don’t buy anything outright for stuff I don’t have. A few exceptions are when I see something for a great price that I know I can flip into something I need. .410 slugs or buckshot is a good example. I don’t have one, but I often buy the cartridges for trades.

Next Monday WA GUNS will be hosting their New Years Day Shoot, I will be buying two five gallon buckets of range brass from the Shoot.
I love having a few beers and separating it all then get it prepped to resell.
Do I need it, of course not, but I will buy it any way.

I seem to end up with odd lots of reloading supplies and equipment from garage or estate sales, or from Craigslist or social media sites. It'll end up being just to get a die set or a mold, and I end up with the whole pile. I try to keep track of what's there, advertise some of the unneeded stuff for sale, and sell individual items pretty regularly. I did go buy 4 sets of dies from a guy, just to save a dollar and a half off of one of the sets, but unopened rcbs die sets are hard to pass up. Those extra sets became birthday presents for a few friends.

I also am known in my friend circle as the local reloading nut, so I get lots of requests for gear and components. So I don't sweat it if I end up with stuff I don't immediately need, but I'm too much of a tightwad (Scottish heritage) to buy new stuff at full price that I don't have a use for...

people yard give away tons of good stuff in Seattle Rich neighborhoods! Cast iron pans, tons of vintage tools, paintings, ever a Fire Magic grill ! <<< yes, I scavenger a very good condition one, just have to do some rewiring for the temp prob and ignitors - child play stuff.

Anyway, I always fantasize about seeing a lawn full of reloading gear!!

You can get small primer 308 and 6.5 creed. I use them in 6br.
I have found small primer 6.5CM (Federal) brass at the range. I'm running low on LRP <400 so I loaded a few up with my favorite load. I didn't see any noticeable difference on paper. I haven't run across any 308 brass using small small primers yet. With the lack of available LRP I may be ordering 500 Starline with small primer pockets.

I've never found a srp 308 other than a single lapua Palma case. Seems like people are very careful with them. I would like to try a set of 50. Peterson or alphas...

I have obtained brass and/or loaded ammo from a few various sources that I don’t own guns for.

IIRC I have either a stash of empty cases, or at least one box of loaded ammo, in; .25-06, .22-250, .25-20, 7x57, .300 H&H, .32 S&WL, .41 Action Express… and one or two others I can’t remember off the top of my head. 🤪

Stay safe.

Not anything (no 50 bmg), but like you I consider the merits of guns and cartridges I may get (mostly levers.)

OP - "Do you buy and keep components for cartridges you don’t shoot?"

No. Have enough troubles finding and keeping materials to load the ones I do.

I will sometimes get brass I don't load from range scrap but give those away to the local guys that can use them after I get what I want out. Mostly 380, 40, and 10s. Sometimes a few 357sigs or 5-7x28s but just can those as its not enough to keep up with and not many people want em anyway.

I usually only pick up things that will work in what I have to load. Thing is I have something in some many different calibers it makes it easy. The bullets for instance, I can use the 308cal in things like 30 Carbine, 30-30, 300 Savage, 308, and 30'06. I can use 7mm stuff in 7x30, 280 Rem, 7mmRM, or the STW. And so on and so on. My biggest hang up now is finding 30-30 cases that I can use for the 7x30, 30-30, and now the 360 BKHMR.

I started casting because the bullets for my 454 were too expensive for the amount I was shooting it. That led into molds for just about everything else rifle or handguns, and well they are like Lay's potato chips, you just can't have one.

The last time I had anything for something I didn't shoot was when a co-worker gave me several hundred milsurp 45 ACP's, and then through another deal I ended up with 32 boxes of 50 loaded target rounds. I didn't even have a pistol to shoot them with. Of course that had to change, so there is another one.

I basically built my collection around basic cases, the 308 and 30-06 so I could use the easy to find parent case to neck up or down into what was needed. The "different" ones are the .223 and 30-30, and I'm working on those.

And all this time I thought folks were buying stuff they couldn't use so the guys that did couldn't find what they needed. 😕

No point in buying what I don't need.
However, I still have some cases and bullets for 6.5x55 Swede. That rifle went with the ex-gf.
In the market for a ,38 swede mauser or newer so I can use those componenets.
