Concealed Carry novelty

The odd quirk to the WI story is that it has been completely legal to open carry previous to the legislature & governor passing concealed carry this past summer (takes effect November 1). Along with many other WI residents, we did make some public displays of exercising our right to carry openly in recent years even under the reign of Governor Doyle (D) and the Democratic controlled Senate & Assembly.

As a resident, I find it frustrating that with just 2 weeks to go until Concealed Carry becomes law, there seems to still be some questions about exactly what qualifies for the required "training" prior to application.

As one who was "grandfathered" in to obtaining hunting licenses without the need for hunter training course, never having served in the military or law enforcement, or any other apparently qualifying activity other than hunting and shooting for all of my life, how can I meet the qualifications and apply for the CC permit immediatley? If anyone out there really knows (as opposed to conjecture & presumtion) please let me know.

Ive been cc for about 20 years now. You have to figure out what type of gun and method of carry is convenient, comfortable and practical for you. For me that has meant switching from belt carry to pocket in the summer, jacket pocket rest of the year. Also switched from old school external hammer .38 snub to internal hammer DAO .38.

" 2. he thinks that the novelty of concealed carry will wear off after 2-3 months and people will start to not carry."

Interesting. If his opinion is accurate, then what was the driving force to allow concealed carry?

I've also seen some stats that indicated there is a novelty factor in being able to carry concealed. A certain percentage of new permit holders stop carrying their guns over time and never renew their permits. Lots of people are impressed with new stuff and quickly move on after the new wears off. It's to be expected.

I'm from Michigan. I don't know how many permit holders carry but there are still
lots of new permits being issued. I've had mine for about 7 years now and carry
all the time and everywhere that's legal. Two carry weapons, a Glock G36 and
a little Ruger LCP when wearing stuff that doesn't hide the Glock well enough.
Open carry is legal in Michigan so if somebody were to notice the gun I don't
really care. Only ever had one person ask me ( retired LEO ) if I had a gun.
She was just at the right angle to see the bulge/outline of the Glock under
a polo shirt.I think Michigan now has about 300,000 permit holders.

I did not carry for the first 5 years after I got my permit because I knew I did not have the skill or presence to do so safely. I've since changed that and carry daily. As for this:

They only want to carry when they "think" it might be "dangerous" outside.

I'm not smart enough to do that math... If I could accurately predict a deadly encounter I would just avoid it. It's never been a novelty. I'll stop wearing my gun when I stop wearing pants (maybe).

I've had my ccw for a year and only once have I left the house unarmed. Not a novelty to me, but a privilege.

I'm new (this year) to conceal carry and I am finding two main areas of difficulty.

1. I bought an XDm 3.8 Compact for carry purposes. That's smaller than a Glock 19, most 1911s, most Sigs, most CZs, and other makes that folks here talk about easily concealing yet I am finding it a challenge to conceal. No, I haven't tried a Crossbreed or knockoff yet mainly because I don't want to have to go out and buy bigger pants on top of all the other money I have spent on this endeavor. Nor do I relish waiting 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. But even with a good belt I have a noticeable bump using an Outside the Waistband holster and it often peeks out when I brush my cover garment back to retrieve my wallet (right rear) or anything in my right front .

Crossbreed is having a blemish sale right now. I sent money in and had an XDm Supertuck in a week at half price. Can't tell a difference from my non blemish. I conceal a full size XDm in a t-shirt and shorts at times with one. Usually I take the easy way out and carry a 1911.

I'd like to think that a percentage of those folks who got CCL and then stopped carrying came to the realization that they didn't have the proper mindset or temperament. Far better that then to just mindlessly continuing to carry.
It is a major responsibility.

..seen for myself that a lot of card holders don't carry if it is the least bit inconvienant (sic).

You may be interested to find when one makes a sidearm a true part of their lifestyle ..surprise..it's never inconvenient.

As for myself I always carry. I'll pick up a revolver on the way out just taking out the trash; inconvenient..never.

I think he's probably correct. I've certainly met CHL holders who are like that.

It is a personal thing. Some people find it onerous and some people find it natural. If you are trained and not a felon, I'd certainly appreciate it if you carried on a regular basis...but that's just me.

I think he's right on both counts. For many people, they get a permit, get a carry gun, start carrying (with all the discomfort and hassle it causes, along with the anxiety of accidentally "brandishing" or going someplace it's not allowed), then give it up after a while. Many of them realize they got along fine without carrying for years, carry for a while without using/needing the weapon, then just decide it isn't worth the trouble most of the time.

I concur. I have taught maybe a dozen CCW classes, and I would guess that only 3 in 4 people who take the class get the permit, and of those, only 1 or 2 will actually carry frequently.

I, too, believe the sheriff is pretty much correct.

Here in Iowa, we just had "shall issue" passed effective at the beginning of 2011. There was a surge in the first few months of the year on permit applications. The number of applications being applied for each month began to taper off after about the first quarter of the year (see this link for application numbers in my own county).

It stands to reason that fewer people are applying simply because most of the people who want it got it early in the year. But I know several folks who got the permit and do not carry regularly. So yes, to some degree, I think it's kind of a fad for some people.

At the same time, in Iowa anyway, there's other reasons to get the permit. Iowa requires that you have either an annual permit to acquire handguns or a permit to carry in order to purchase handguns. The annual permit to acquire costs $11. The permit to carry lasts 5 years and costs $55. So some folks simply see the permit to carry as a permit to acquire that lasts longer and costs the same - and gives them the freedom to carry openly or concealed if they feel the desire to on occasion.

like dave p im from michigan and id guess about half the people i know that have gotten a cpl just did it to take the hassle of going to the sheriffs dept to get a purchase permit out of purchasing a handgun.

that was the original reason that i got mine. you can only get a purchase permit from 8-430 monday through friday (at least in my county dont know if thats statewide) for me that meant either leaving work early unpaid or using vacation time. if you have a cpl it is also your purchase permit.

make life a lot easier when you happen to be out of town on a saturday and see a pistol you want. now that i have the permit i do carry where allowed since it didnt make any sence not to carry when i have a permit to.

Above all else, I value my family, my life, my friends, my freedoms and my home. I see no novelty in holding a concealed carry permit. I see responsibility.

I experienced the opposite of what is talked about here. The first few months we had concealed carry in Texas I didn't do it very often. It was new, uncomfortable, and I was paranoid that everyone could see a gun.

Now, years later, I don't think anything of it. Wind blows my jacket open sometimes, oh well. People see a flash of leather when I reach for my wallet, so what. I carry now pretty much all the time, no novelty to it.

The sheriff is probably correct that most people won't actually carry all the time, but it's probably not just because the novelty wore off.

I know guys who are just so afraid that someone will "make" them they worry themselves into a frenzy and stop carrying. Kind of sad really.

When I took the time to get my CCW in New Hampshire, I carried maybe twice. Just too afraid to get into some kind of trouble for having it, even though legally I knew I was fine. Not that I thought I would misuse it, just that it was new to me to just have one on me, so I didn't. Now that I'm older (and it helps to have a badge) I rarely ever leave the house without it. It's nicer to have it under a jacket in the fall, but even in the summer I carry a full size USP and just dress around it.

It's a seasonal thing for me, while I have had my permit for several years now, it depends on weather conditions. Hot summer days its, a pair of pocket .380's w/extra mags. Cooler fall & spring temps allows me to use a belly band with PM9 tucked inside w/extra mag, and a pocket .380 for backup. Winter allows me to carry pretty much what ever I want, lately that will be my .40 S&W M&Pc or my Sig 9mm 226, with the PM9 as backup. LM

How many places do you go that really require a gun of some sort. Really, I carry sometimes when I go to places I consider without law or beyond the influence of society or "rules". But truely in most day to day travels I feel no need to carry. Now I have something in my car allways. But I just don't feel the need in most of the places I travel to in my area. Crime is not a big factor here for the most part.
So, I respect the ability to carry, which I have, and do carry on occasion, but not even close to everyday.

I don't think it'll be just a passing fancy like the "pet rock" or something. I think the people that believe in protecting me, mine, and ours will do just that. And do it all the time. I know I do.

We got CCW legislation here in Ohio back about 5-6 years ago. I used to carry almost every day prior to that in my 20 year LE career. I even packed occasionally in between, based on dangers and personal risk. The novelty hasn't worn off yet..........:D
