New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has conditionally vetoed two pieces of anti-gun legislation (A3689 and S816), imposing conditions that would allow the establishment of shall-issue carry permits (by removing the impossible-to-satisfy requirement of "justifiable need") and the repealing of the smart gun law from 2002, if the legislature were to accept the conditions.

More details on this are available here: https://anjrpc.site-ym.com/page/ChristieVetoesShall

This is NJ's best chance to change from a gun-unfriendly state to one that respects the rights of its nearly 9 million residents to defend themselves effectively. In addition, it would allow the continued sale of traditional weapons after a viable "smart gun" is released to the market.

Please join us in voicing support for this measure by contacting every member of the legislature listed here and tell them to vote to accept the conditions imposed by Christie's conditional vetoes of A3689 and S816.

Rember to be brief and civil.

Dear XXYYZZ,

I support Governor Chris Christie's conditional vetos of A3689 and S816 and expect you to as well.

Couldn't resist, despite the very real importance of contacting your legislators in a polite, concise manner.

Makes it easier to count up responses, as opposed to wading through a long letter to try to figure out what the constituent is really saying.

Apart from whether or not Christie is just tryng to extablish "street cred" with gun owners (or would-be gun owners), I find this indicative of a general shift in the U.S. toward acceptance of the idea that guns aren't inherently evil.

This, despite the screechings of <ahem> "others."

And for heaven's sake, IMHO, don't recite the text of the second Amendment, They know what it says. They may not know what it means, but they know what it says, and citing it is kind of a "trigger" that the writer is wun uh them redneck Bambislaying right wing nuts. At least, again, in my humble opinion.

I think it would help by illustrating that 47 out 50 states already have some form of shall issue*. And that New Jersey should modernize it's gun laws to better reflect the changing attitudes toward self defense by citizens.

If Illinois can pass shall issue law, certainly New Jersey can. The other states that still have no form of shall issue are Maryland, Hawaii and of course New Jersey. I think getting people of all walks of life and all genders have carry permits in other states should also could help by writing in too as well as New Jersey constituents. The politicians need to be reminded that there is a very different world past the Delaware River. And it is 2016 and not 1966 anymore.

(* Even the so called Anti-gun states like NY and CA issue carry permits if you live in one of the 'right' counties. Even even states like Massachusetts, while it might not be shall issue. Carry permits are being issued. Same for Rhode Island and Delaware.)

I am a bit of a cynic. My guess is he vetoed them in this way so he could take credit with gun owners, while not actually changing anything since the legislature is not going to accept the changed language.

Having said that, you never know what the right amount of persuasion on your legislators might accomplish. I don't think it will matter any, but it won't hurt to give it a serious try.

My personal thought is that a few dozen polite personal visits from gun owners from their own districts will mean a lot more than phone calls, and phones calls will mean a lot more than letters.

I know this is an old thread and I'm hijacking a bit but...

A well written letter printed and mailed is also much more effective than an email or phone call. People understand that those willing to take the effort and expense to print something, put it in an envelope, address and stamp it then go mail it are much more serious than someone just emailing or calling.

If you don't believe it try sending a letter to someone and see how hat the reaction is.
