Is it possible to convert one of the many inexpensive (at least relatively) P7 PSPs on the market from the European heel mag release to the P7M8 style thumb mag release?

anything is possible if you spend enough money, but it would be cheaper to buy a M8. a conversion would require extensive frame modification and completely different mags

it would be more cost effective to learn to use the PSP's mag release. it's much better/faster than any other heel release...with the possible exception of the original beretta 92

totally not worth it money wise, besides, it is fashionable to use the heel release, much harder to loose the mag accidentally, and it says you can get the job done with one mag.

The simpliest way to convert a PSP from a heel release to a P7 button release would be to sell the PSP and put the money towards a P7.

To mechanically change out the release would be a custom job. Considering how hard it is to get HK parts, especially P7 parts, and what a good gunsmith would charge, this would get very expensive, very fast.

Btw, I've owned both a PSP and a P7M8 and I actually prefered the PSP release. I had problems with the P7M8dumping the mag when the release was bumped in the holster.

I later realized the whole P7 series was not for me and sold my PSP and my P7's. I'm happy I tried them out and I'm happier with other guns.

I have both. I have no strong preference. I carry the PSP and like it slightly better. M8s sometimes have a nicer finish as they are commercial quality rather than police contract quality. I stoned some tool marks off my PSP and then Gunkoted it.

I was just wondering if it was a possible (and if so simple) matter of swapping some parts.

Honestly I'd rather have the M8 trigger guard on the PSP if I had to choose :p

Years ago the guys at makarov.com (which I believe is gone now) had a kit to add a thumb mag release to a Makarov ... it was a pretty simple affair (and kind of ugly). So I bet one could make something that would work in a similar fashion relatively easy.

I agree with all of the commentors above. Without a doubt, your best course of action would be to sell me your PSP, and then buy yourself a nice M8/M13.

the difference is that there isn't any room on the frame for a 1911 type release.

i thought your original question was to add the M8 release to the PSP

Could be pretty tricky and you'd probably need accurate blueprints (or an engineer) and a good machinist to come out ahead (if replicating the p7 release).
Might be a little cheaper to do a different type of release, and mod the mags but probably still more than the gun .. especially if you have to replace modded mags shot from the gun while on the move!

As mentioned, the heel release is a good system for retaining the mag.
Keeps it in when you most need it in and forces your hand to grab hold to get it out .. might as well stick it in your pocket, especially at $40+ each!
