Picked up a box of Federal 243 55 grain noslers today and my rifle loves them. The only problem is that they cost me $26.00 for the box.

Has anybody made a similar load or duplicated this load for their 243? I already have some 70 grain noslers and 65 grain v-max bullets. Also have a bag of new brass. Just needing the right powder and combination

What works good together?

If you could get a hold of the current Nosler #6 Reloading Manual, It will list the powder combos for the most accurate load tested in both the 55 and 70 gr bullet weights. I'm reluctant to quote these loads since Nosler lists some accuracy loads that are at maximum. You will never be able to duplicate factory loads since manufacturer's use what is called non cannister powder that is unavailable to reloaders.

I use H414 and CCI 250's to exceed a measured 4000 fps with .243" 55 grain BT's. I was really surprised to see how accurate they were in my 1:10" heavy barrel custom Mauser, and talk about terminal performance!

You could back off a bit to match Federal's 3850 fps velocity, but my particular rifle seems to gain accuracy from any particular bullet when pushed on the fast side. Lots medium to medium slow propellants out there that can easily get the velocity; it's just a matter of seeing what combo your rifle likes.

Good luck.

I was surprised with the federal load. I tried it in a Winchester 70 I picked up today from a THR member. Looking for a new "varmit" toy. Didn't know how the 1:10 twist barrel would do with the light bullets. Bought 3 different 243 loads today from a local shop. Started with the Federals and am looking no farther. Going to take the other two boxes back and either trade in on more ammo or get the cash and buy some 55's and some different powder.(Gonna buy the 55's anyway)

Trying to see if there is a "powder pattern" before I buy something I don't already have.

i can usually duplicate a load fairly closely by measuring the factory load velocity (or taking it off the box in a pinch) then weighing the factory load powder. i then match up the weight and velocity in a few manuals. this gives me powder i need. while it may not be exact, it hasnt failed me yet! i can usually improve a minute amount again by changing seating depth.
