could not stop myself I purchased a 458 socom

Same here, I couldn't resist and it's a real hoot. I bought a Rock River upper last year and it shipped way way faster than expected. They estimated 6 months and I received it in under 2. I think they were waiting on 5.56 parts to complete orders so I got bumped to the front of the line. At that time brass was 80 cents a piece and loaded SBR fmj was $2 each so in my mind it was worth it to buy loaded ammo and save brass (especially since I had no LPM primers yet).

I have had good luck with the lancer .458 socom magazines, just be sure not to push a round straight down into them while loading like you can with a 5.56 double stack mag, it will bend the feed lips.

ETA: If you haven't found it yet there is a dedicated .458 socom forum out there with some good info.

I put together a 10.5" 458 pistol this year and it's a hoot to say the least... I put a Leupold Red dot on it and I use GI mags with Magpul followers( for 5.56 too) and they feed like butter!! Those GI Magpul replacement followers are a game changer for sure. I would like to see the ammo not be $3 a shot though, that's the only downside... I do have dies and powder (AA2200) but no bullets...

Hint: If anyone wants to get into a 100% running .458 Socom consider VERY strongly a Tromix Bolt from

Bolt-LH-525x394.jpg
You can use a correct Milspec Bolt Carrier assembly but you really need the Tromix Bolt in it ! Believe me I and friends have wasted their time and money until we replaced the bolt ! You can modify and polish and fool with gas and buffers and they may help but the Bolt is key to reliability in the Socom and Tromix has the lock on what actually was designed to work !
Also the D&H "Big Bore Magazines " feed much better if you are looking for that elusive 100% reliability.

I'm sure others will have stories how great their .458s run with stock 30 round mags with 20 rounds and how the other or nameless brand BCG work just fine , but I have fooled with enough of them and then just dropped in a Tromix bolt (head) and suddenly the turd about to be a boat anchor after changing and polishing and fooling with everything suddenly runs as good as the mag and ammo you use, just like that !
When you study the Bolt faces of the Tromix bolt and any of the "other" bolt faces you can see why , and the containment area also is much thicker . The machining is precise and crisp also not kinda smooshed to get the big cartridge head in.
Once you get your .458 running those 405 grain cast 45-70 bullets really work well and 18oo fps can easily be reached and they will split BIG logs ! The 350 grain round nose softpoints are amazing also and can be pushed another 100 fps out of the same 16" barrels. 1900 FPS 350 .45 slugs are BIG medicine on bear and yes I have seen them take DRN Blackies (2) within 125 yard and 60 yards .I know guys that shot big boar in Calif with them too.
If your hunting you will want the appropriate capacity mags and D&H make 4 and 10 round ones. My son and I have a 4 round each and a few 10 rounders . Yes we fooled with Milspec mags with followers ect.
Also the
Duramag 458 SOCOM Stainless Steel Magazine, Ss Spring Cpd Plate 1058041175CPD Color: Matte Black, Finish: Matte,
work very well too, maybe even a little slicker than the previous D&H mags.

Just trying to save you people some $ and frustration if you are having any problems with you .458 Socom.

I purchased an upper last year got the dies,Magazines and built up a lower but have not been able to locate any amo/brass etc ,so there it sits .Good luck with your build .

I have enjoyed mine since I bought it. I have used more ~400 grain bullets than anything else. It’s been reliable with old Colt 20 round .223 mags.

I use it more than the 450 bm’s I have bought but I also have 45 ACP carbines if I want to plink with pistol bullets.

@sarduy

At that range, you can place unloaded weapons facing the parking lot. The actions have to remain open all the time, no exceptions! If you look at my .50 in the background, the bolt is locked back. RO's walk the line all day checking and make sure everyone is safe. So, no problems.

Here's a look down range, I've posted this before.

Hard to imagine that this is in SoCal, the white on the side of the hill is 1000 yards. We have numerous ranges that are big, most run about 600-700 yards. Some run bigger, this one, Angeles Shooting Range is huge and has multiple types of ranges.

ETA: @gunmechanic what do you need as far as brass and projos? PM me and we can work something out, I have some extra brass and I think projos to get you started.

WOW:what::what:. That is a super nice range! Why can't we get something that that near Oklahoma City??? The only range I know of that has long range 1k plus targets is out near Lawton which is a bit over an hour away from us... It's Fouled Bore Precision Range if anyone here has used that facility.

That's just the rifle side of the range, if you look next to my rifle on the bench you can see one of the clay throwers. They have 3 of them located on the end of the range.

On the other side of the the rifle range is the pistol range. Further up the road they have private ranges you can rent, a dedicated shotgun range an a silhouette club. They also have a gun store located in the parking lot. So lots of stuff happens there. The fires we had a couple years ago burnt down the range office but they have since replaced that.

You can be a member but they don't require it, it's open to the public all year long and gets so crowded on the weekends that people have to wait in line to shoot or go to one of the other ranges.

Is this SOCOM the type which sounds like a 23 MM Cannon at our club?

Mk-211: very cool.

Do they have any metal targets set up for rifles?

That is the only factor missing from our nice club , unless a rifle used at Action Pistol (30 yard plates) shoots non-magnum handgun chamberings.

Yeah the 458 Socom is definitely an attention grabber... The recoil is like a 12ga pump IMO with the sig brace.

Ignition Override, yeah they have steel targets for people to shoot at. Seems strange that there's none in the picture.

They have two types, black for small caliber and red for heavy caliber.

well the rug got pulled out from underneth me on the 458 socom some how the place I ordered over sold and now I am without my rifle. thanks for all your input it was super thanks deputybruce

I’ve toyed with the idea. I have a couple ARs that don’t get much use. A new upper might be the thing. Just haven’t decided if I’d prefer a “thumper” or a 6.5 Grendel … or a 6 ARC.

I have enjoyed mine since I bought it. I have used more ~400 grain bullets than anything else.

I use 250 gr. and 300 gr. for deer, but like you... use mostly a 405 gr JSP. I am usually hunting hogs however.

I've had my SOCOM for 12 years now and shot pretty close to a thousand rounds through it . Still enjoy it.

But recommend all who can, to reload for it.
