Coyote Hunting Frustations

A Quiver Critter and a good electronic call with a rabbit squeal on it will bring them in if they are around. A mouth call is handy also, like Flintknapper said, you can vary the volume. (Some electronic calls can with Bluetooth) I've had them circle me (I usually set up in a tree row between fields) I've done better on full moon nights, (Legal in WI, no hunting during breeding season) but have got them in the day also. If you hunt an area where human scent (preferably yours) is normal, you needn't use a cover scent. More often than not, it scares them off. Usually once they see the quiver critter the brain shuts down. they will often charge full out at it, I shot one with the cover in it's mouth running away. It blazed in full speed, grabbed the top, and kept going. That's part of the reason I put the decoy no more than 50 yards from me. If I did it more often (I go about 3 times a year), if we had more feral hogs up here, I'd get a can for my AR, I've had several coyotes circling me, but without a can, and sometimes with, the rest will head for the next county when you shoot.
I've shot coyotes while deer and turkey hunting also:

25 yards running at me after a walker on a drive kicked it up and missed it 5 times with a 12 ga. My son, behind me, got the doe.

Out of curiosity more than any thing else Other than a need for predator control do the carcasses have any other use, hides maybe. I’m assuming those left in the field would provide food for other carrion eaters.

Predator control only reason to hunt them as there is not enough cold weather down here for fur to get prime, but the hawks, cara cara, etc. are grateful.

Spring birthing of cattle is always a good time and place. Coyotes love to eat the afterbirth.
They are not above eating the calf if they are able and they also like calf droppings, as it contains a large amount of undigested milk .

Sure glad to hear I'm not the only one. Had a coyote charge my call (which was about 20 yds @ 1 o'clock), he came from my 7 o'clock. I heard his "hoofs" on the caliche road @ my left. He crossed at a dead run, about 15' from my AR muzzle from left to right and I missed him, 4 times! Not enough lead but each shot was getting closer; the last shot was just below his tail as he ran into the brush.

I have captured daytime pictures of coyotes at that location/camera but for every daytime photo there is a dozen or more nighttime photos

I'm surprised that they are so nocturnal w/so little pressure. Obviously they use the two track as a major route from bedding to feeding areas. Based on time stamps it seems more activity in evening (5:30-6:15 PM if my guess is right), as opposed to pre-dawn. Coyotes are crepuscular by nature, so I'd definitely plan to make that my last stand of the day and stay until dark a few times and see what happens. Another plan would be to call near their bedding area in the brush w/shotgun if you can sneak in quietly.

And if your 'Yote stops and turns up sideways....SHOOT, because he's getting ready to leave post haste.

Don't get many pictures of live coyotes as I shoot first and take pictures later
In fact, I finally found what I think is the only live coyote pics I ever took and that was because they were not on the ranch where I had permission. Try as I might, I couldn't coax them across that fence.:)

We can’t hunt them at night in Missouri.

Can you trap them?

I have seen more Coyotes during the day mowing fields on a tractor than during any hunting activity. They know the sound is a dinner bell as critters will be eliminated or at least their hiding spots will be.

If you want to go all in on predator hunting get chickens, everything likes the way they taste, Coyotes will come in as soon as they come out.

I built automatic doors for my coop that are set with a lamp timer. Just get ready before the doors open and when they see their potential meal(s) come out they won’t even notice the door on the balcony is cracked open or that they are in the shooting range.

Its legal to trap them but this is more for recreation than anything.

Maybe I’ll give it a go this weekend. Water temps still slightly too cold to fish around here.

you just have to go out and give it a try.. ive had the best luck on sleety or snowy days here in sw mo. windy days I don't bother.

I have the best luck during deer season. when im ready to leave ill blow a mouth call for a minute or two.lots of time a yote comes galloping in.

I remember one time when I was hunting with my son he was about 12. we hadn't seen any deer all day. he was ready to go and I said just hang out a minute. I blew the yote call and a yote came running in.

he later told his mom that I was some kind animal whisperer and I could talk to coyotes. lol

They say that if you own a dog that you need to be smarter than the dog. It's kind of like that with coyote hunting because it helps to be woods wise. Coyote hunting when I was young was always with a mouth call that sounded like a squealing rabbit, squealing blue jay, or fawn deer in distress. Now it has progressed to electronic players that do the same calls depending on which number you select. In western Oklahoma it's common to drive in farm country, park the truck out of sight, walk over the hill to a undisturbed drainage and set up to watch upwind and do the calling. A good method if you're really wanting to be successful is to have someone lay in the grass or weeds about 40 yards upwind from the calling and shoot the running coyotes with a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buck or #4 turkey loads. The person running the call uses a varmint rifle and takes the shot if the coyote stops. I hunted a lot with a government hunter when I was young and as suspected I was the shotgunner. The shotgun was a Remington Model 11 autoloader with a cutts compensator and when I fired laying close to the ground the blast would fill my face with sand or dirt. We got a lot of coyotes and every time I screwed up I got my ass chewed out.

Better be careful, you can get hooked on coyote hunting that way, trust me. ;)

I used to hunt deer, but lost interest and only hunt exotics when freezer is empty and coyotes the rest of the time. Exotics are usually cow only and positive identification can be difficult , so fill in pre sunrise and post sunset calling coyotes and hunt the exotics in good light, making for interesting combination hunts.

Thankfully, when the freezer's full there's always coyotes that need hunting. :D
