I've only got one credit card right now. While I do get a minor benefit from it, I'd prefer a card that gets me some kind of sporting good or shooting accessories benefit.
What kind of deals do you guys get with Cabelas cards? What other options exist for a guy who'd rather rack up free Pmags and .357 ammo than airline miles?

I have an "affinity" card that gives the cash back rewards to the NRA.

I'd rather help insure we will still be able to buy Pmags and ammo.

My CC has a chash back benefit on all purchases and they run a 5% special on certain things here and there. I use it like my debit card, with no balance carried. I make my daily purchases with it and pay the balance off each evening when I get home.

I can use the cash back rewards for gift cards from various vendors. Some have a deal with Discover and you can get more for your money that way. For instance Bass Pro will give you a $50 gift card for $45 if you do it through Discover.

I totally LOVE my Cabelas card. Had it for about 3 years now. I have the black card and we pay our bill in total every month, so never paid a cent in interest, and have built up over $2K in Cabelas bucks (cash to spend at Cabelas).

And if you watch the deals, like 3X, 4X, sometimes up to 10X points on special purchases at Cabelas, you can really rack points up fast. And there is no limit on earnings or time limit to use your points. Every time I buy something in Cabelas, and I swipe my Cabelas Visa, they always tell me how many points I have and ask me if I want to use them. It is so easy!

Last time i was there, the cashier commented that i had a pretty nice awards balance and asked me what I was saving them for. I told her I didn't know yet, but would figure it out at some point. I asked her what the biggest thing she ever saw sold where the customer used just award points. She told me they had an outfitter who was a regular customer. Bought everything needed for his clients there, and jumped on every special extra point deal he could. The guy built up enough points in two years to buy a $16000 boat!

Good grief!
I thought my goal was optimistic. I'm just trying to build up enough points to get a free AR-15. That seems rather minuscule compared to a new boat. :)

Does this also work with online purchases?
I buy stuff from Cabelas a lot. They're often just a little more than other places, but their customer service rocks. Especially with shoes and boots.... I have hobbit feet so I often need to buy and return and try and return again. Cabelas never gives me even the slightest grief about it.
But I rarely get to an actual Cabelas store. If I had $800 in merchandise waiting for me though, I probably would!

A $16,000 boat... yeesh! I wonder if any other cards offer a deal like that on saving up cash points. I'd save up for a car.

Last year bought a Springfield EMP 9 package with Cabelas points...no cash, over $1000 of gun free to me. Beats the heck out of airline miles.

For members, there used to be deals around October where you got up to $150 off a $500 purchase. Since the recession those have been $75.

Cabelas, it gets no better if you are into outdoors sports, especially shooting.

I get free guns a lot and that feels real good when you're walking out the store.

Like Wally, I have a card that gives points to the NRA.
As I dislike using plastic, esp. for non-FtF purchases, this card primarily gets used to pay my monthly satellite TV bill, and little else. Then it gets paid in full every month.

There is a Bass Pro Shop near my home. As such I have a Bass Pro Credit card. I've been happy with it.

Become debt free and pay cash man. Then you'll stop worrying about these credit card gimmicks that pretend to "give back" a fraction of the money they make of folks.

Or... if you've ever needed to rent a car, you know a credit card comes in handy.
It took years for me to get a card, but they do have their uses. The key is in making them work for you. Like the guys who are buying handguns and boats at Cabelas... that's making one work for you!

I bought a Glock so SF with points a couple months ago. I've also bought a Mauser HSC, Mauser 1914, Savage .17 HMR 100% and put points toward several nice 20 ga sxs they've had on different occasions. I also outfitted my new (3 years ago) boat with fishing gear. Current balance is about $200.

Its a great way to buy stuff you don't need with money that doesn't really exist.

Yes, I can buy using points to pay for my items, tax, and shipping is almost always free as a club member.

You couldn't buy a car unless Cabelas starts selling them. The guy bought a $16K v-hull boat from Cabelas.

Pay your bill on time and in full and there is no cost. There is no annual fee with my Cabelas Card.

Very few places offer a "cash discount" so you are paying extra for using paper money. Extra again if you have to use an ATM other than your bank's. Plus I get some purchase protection and other benefits with their "black card". Their fraud protection can be a little too good but I also get a real person instantly.

"Cabela’s CLUB Visa Signature card has no annual fee and rewards elite cardholders by giving back 5 percent in Cabela’s CLUB points for purchases from Cabela’s and 1 percent for all other purchases. Visa Signature CLUB members will also enjoy exclusive benefits such as sports and entertainment VIP packages; concierge services; travel, hotel, spa and shopping upgrades; enhanced security features and more."

Originally my card of choice was my AMEX card. However, this year my wife and I began using the Cabelas Black card. This is working out real well.

Every year we buy gifts through Cabelas for Christmas. Mostly the food samplers like the smoked bacon sampler and working up. Simple as Cabelas maintains our list. We use our Cabelas bucks to cover the Christmas list. A simple call and things just automatically happen.

Like most when we use a card it gets paid soon as the bill comes in. Love that Cabelas card!

Obviously you have read the entire post and we appreciate your input!

I love Cabelas and pay my card of at the end of the month (with no interest and no debt - to those who cannot read previous post). I have managed to purchase several major ticket items with no cost to myself by using my credit card.

However... if you are a believe in tacking... Every purchase is tracked.

There is no gimmick. It is simple. If you're disciplined and can have available credit without acting immature and make purchases you can't afford, then you can make a CC work for you. If you're not capable of self control then you probably should pass on them.

I have got a good start on my goal of a free AR-15, and Discover hasn't made one red cent in interest off me.

Heh

The only thing I buy from Cabella's is the nuts. Those pecans are good...

The Cabella's card, while great if you like paying retail, do offer a slight allure. But I really don't pay full retail for ANYTHING as the markups are immense. So yes, you rack up points, and it feels like your getting somewhere, but if you bought the same things elsewhere. (amazon comes to mind as I get free shipping with my amazon prime.) you'll save more in the long run.

The Cabelas card isn't like a JCPenny card or a Dillards card. You can use it anywhere. The points pile up at Cabelas. You use the card like any other Visa. Make all of your normal purchases with it, then pay it off in full. Use it at Wal Mart, your local grocery store, restaurants, for fuel etc. Then pay it off. Use it like your debit. That's what I do. I don't even wait for the monthly statement. If I use the card that day, I usually pay for the purchases that evening when I get home.

How do you pay for your orders from Amazon?

The Cabelas Visa is a VISA card that works just like every other credit card with Amazon or anyone else.

You can use your Amazon Prime and pay with your Cabelas card so you get your cheaper product, free shipping, AND points from Cabelas.

I very seldom buy anything from Cabelas, but I use their card every month to pay all my bills from my house note on down, then send in a payment the next day for the full amount. It costs me nothing extra (no credit card fees or interest) and I get a couple of free guns every year.

Unless the credit card interest accrues from the date of purchase, you should wait to pay the bill until the statement comes. Why not get the use of the money a bit longer? Admittedly, bank interest is minimal these days but might as well make a few pennies as opposed to giving it away.

Using another little slick trick...

A large local super market chain is Giant Eagle around here. Giant Eagle owns the Get Go gas stations. Each $50 spent at Giant Eagle earns .10 in fuel perks (ten cents off a gallon of gas up to a 30 gallon limit). Additionally Giant Eagle sells gift cards for just about everything you can imagine. Gift cards typically earn $.20 per gallon of gas. We buy gift cards for all the local restaurants we frequent as well as other stores. So we use the Cabelas card to pay for all that stuff as well. Not unusual for me to fill my wife's truck or my truck literally for free with gas.

We also use the Cabelas cards for Amazon which we use quite a bit.

I see what you're saying cfullgraf. Interest doesn't accrue from date of purchase, but I'm afraid I'll get myself in trouble and lose track of what I've spent so I take care of it ASAP. I'd lose more than the interest if I lost track and overspent.

Deleted.... not a post worthy of the Highroad.

Cabelas, just like any other store has items at retail and items on close out and for sale. I just recently bought a grill from Cabelas that was $100 cheaper at Cabelas than anywhere else, even Amazon.
