Cruise Ship uses Sonic blast on pirates!!

Norwegian news article on the 'pirate-attac'. In Norwegian but pictures of pirates and the unexploded RPG:
http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=296023

The Norwegian news cowerage of this have made a big deal about how the (Norwegian) Captain did prevent the pirates from boarding without firing back. (that he ran over one of the boats and left the pirates just as dead as they would have been if shot is not mentioned much)

Edit to add: Norwegian newspapers say: "The captain used only a 'sonic-device' and did not have to fire any guns at the pirates", so the ship was most likely armed.

Hmmmm.....state of the art sonic device, @ government prices:

$20,000(?)

State of the art rifle in .308: $1,500.
State of the art rifle in .223: $1,200
State of the art pump shottie: $150

Go figure.

"Sonic Device" = Barry Manilow played at very high volume levels. Any pirate that did not collapse/immediately rendered useless by projectile vomiting, was almost instantaneously put to sleep. The cruise lines considered using John Tesh music, but was ruled out as excessively cruel punishment, even to a pirate.

Don't those ships usually have trap shooting onboard?Couple shots over the side into the inflatables.Throw out one rope and watch the "pirates" fight over it.

I saw a TV movie where a Chubacabra got on a cruise ship and the crew tried to take it down the skeet guns and loads. They got all eaten up. :what:

Have a some 'operators' given free room on the cruise with their gear. Probably only take about 5 to do the job.

Stand by to repell boarders....

From the photos published in the morning paper, it would appear that a well-thrown rock could have disabled one of these small boats. They appeared to be 20-25' cheap fiberglass fishing boats. Then again for sh*ts and giggles, the crew could have dropped a Jacob's ladder over the side and stood read to 'greet' them with 10 gallons of hot french-fry oil as the miscreants clambered up. Ever try to climb a Jacob's ladder? No way to do it AND hold a weapon. At about that time, the captain orders full ahead and the boat/occupants are sucked under and churned into chum.

I've got to think that this might be a niche market WRT future employment: master-at-arms on a cruise ship. Doesn't sound like bad duty....

Cheers

I wonder if the "sonic device" sounds anything like the Jolly Green Giant after too many legumes? And they could explain away what's left after a can or two of ammo as "er... we ran over it..." Most civilians are _not_ going to recognize the sound of a minigun...

Hmmm, now that this incident has hit the press, I wonder how long it will take terrorists with 'ear muffs' to try such an attack. A below water line attack could be ugly far from land.

Here's another news update:

MAHE, Seychelles (Nov. 7) - Pirates who attacked a cruise ship off the coast of Somalia grinned as they aimed grenade-launchers and machine guns at the deck and staterooms, some passengers said Monday, recounting the ordeal after safely docking in this Indian Ocean archipelago.

One of the pirates has been positively identified as "Lootie", who is currently wanted in the US for charges of looting in the days following the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

Im just curious why they are to interested in having a less lethal weapon to defend themselves with. If you are being attacked with RPG's, you may need a little more force. That would be like a police officer charging a gunman with an ASP button :D

It's not about less-lethal weapons it's about not using firearms, because they are eeeevil. The did use the biggest and most dadly weapon they had: they ran over one of the boats, but as long as you don't use a firearm it is all PC. Most of the Norwegian ships are not aremed, bacause that would be bad, but they gladly repell boarders with hot steam or sink their boat with fire hoses. But guns are bad so we don't use those.

Maybe It is Time......

OK, I know our U.S. Congress doesn't have the necessary fortitude and it is not "PC" but......

Article I, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution enumerates the powers of Congress including:

"To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;"

Now let's suppose that some enterprising 'cruise' company managed to get Congress to 'grant' a "Letter of Marque and Reprisal". They pick up an old Passenger/Freighter and fix it up with nice staterooms, a casino, a medical facility(when bullets go both ways, somebody on both sides gets hurt:( ) and concealed gun shields. Then they accept passengers that will pay as much as a normal cruise trip for a 'shooter's trip'. Bring your own Battle Rifle and ammo although discount ammo would be available on board. It would require one heck of a liability waiver from each 'passenger'. Then go trolling the pirate areas like a slow tramp steamer. When the pirates open fire, then 'open season, no bag limit' is declared by the ship Captain:D . There could also be a special rate for Class 3 owners and antique cannon enthusiasts! The cruise line would order the ammo for your 1" caliber Gatling gun or 1880 37mm Hotchkiss Revolving Cannon:what: as part of the price of your 'cruise ticket'. Ah, the possibilities are fascinating for a 'nitch market'.

OK, that was fun but Congress won't do it and everyone is scared of liability that when some passenger got killed/maimed, the family would sue the 'cruise' line to death so now I return from the "Outer Limits" to Reality, darn!:banghead:

Anyone else notice those 'pirates' are sort of waving and goofy looking? Gotta be high on something.

And you know if you get high you are gonna listen to music. Loud music with your head shoved up against a sub woofer...

I'm thinking 'sonic weapons' are pretty much debunked by...

A) sticking your fingers in your ears
B) the guy operating the sonic doo-dad getting shot with an AK or RPG
C) chew another stick of Khat and tell the boat to 'turn it up!'

Running 'em over sure beats harsh language. But a .50 cal bullet hose will definitely ruin their day.

Letters of marque... neat idea but really that allows US private ships to engage in acts of piracy... ie "Privateers"

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Goose gunner: They dont want to start an arms-race with the pirates that is what they are thinking.

I know what they are thinking, I just don't see why. But I must agree it is not neccesary to shoot back when you are a 40.000 tonn ship beeing attacked by two 20' boats with outboards, it is so much easier to run them down or run away.

Hey History Nut, you took my idea

However, my thought was that they simply book a cruise with no PC people aboard, let everyone take whatever arms they want, equip ship with good defense against RPG or other large weapons. Then troll. In international waters, the passengers would not have to have any government sanction to protect themselves.

It wasn't a Slim Whitman recording that exploded those Martians' heads! It was "Indian Love Song", done by Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald. Love your conspiracy theories Bogie; keep 'em up!

Nothing wrong with mounting a couple 40mms or 76mms according to Maratime law as I understand it, but the insurance companies tend to throw fits...

You forgot State of the art .50BMG semiauto with scope range 1+ miles 5-8K even a lucky shot would sink their dinky boat.

Thats why I refuse to go on a civilian cruise until they install these on the ships:
