Well, it's been the biggest disappointment of my cruises, but I'm glad it's not endemic. Mind me asking which lines you sail with? (I might need to try another cruise company :D )
So far they've all been Carnival. The one I've got booked though, is NCL. I'm nervous, as I've never had a bad one from Carnival, and feel as though I'm jumping ship.:D It's just that NCL has what we want right now and Carnival doesn't. (7 day Hawaii) The trap shooting was 5 rounds for 5 bucks, a contest where the winner got a trophy and another 5 rounds free. I tried it on 2 cruises, and watched the other times. I really suck at shotgunning.:uhoh:

I once spoke to a gentleman who worked on a cruise ship who told me that they typically stock an armory on board due to making landfall in some less-than friendly places, and because of the threat from terrorists/pirates. This was in the 80's though so im not sure if its still the way its done. Typically wealthy corporations can buy their way into exception for most local laws (even in the U.S.) and I cannot imagine that a cruise line would have a hard time getting the appropriate government permission from every port they land in to have virtually any hardware they desire on hand.

All ocean going ships also train in the use of fire-fighting equipment for use against borders (even freighters which ARENT armed). They generally pack some pretty impressive high pressure hoses that would be amusingly effective against anyone who attempted to board.
