Hi Guys...

Headed to the range in a little and going to be trying out a new powder. Wanted to run it by the pros here on the THR..I have a lot of powders but am always on the look out for new ones and today it's CSB-1..Today's load is a ladder starting at 4gr, 4.1gr,, 4.2gr, 4.3gr...180gr, WSP, 1.130 in .40 S&W..

I have attached the sheet from Hi-Tech and it seems to be different then the one that's been in other threads..A lot of people say to load to universal data but I think that's been shown to be a little hot hence the new data sheet..

Whatca think?

Dont know much about it but you may want to PM "Nordeste" as he's our Spanish Asset and I'm pretty sure he has experience with this powder in your intended application..

i have some chrono data

my guess is your loads are going to be on the light side
and so far my findings are that CSB-1 likes to be pushed a bit to keep it burning consistently
note that i include the projectile length in the chrono data
gosh i love my chrono!!!
load/shoot safely!

Thanks for the info..I saw this a little to late...:banghead: I have a chrono coming on my bday this month so that will help a lot..Now I need someone here in North Atlanta Ga to let me chrono some on there property..:)

Anyway, All loads cycle the action in a G29 with a factory spring. These loads were shot out of 10 to .40 Lonewolf conversion Barrel.. I found it to be a VERY clean soft shooter.. The loads were almost too soft with 4.0gr and were shooting very nice at 4.3gr with no signs of over pressure.

I would say to anyone...Get some of this powder..Its clean, low smoke, avaviable, and a good value..Good Stuff...

The well known and versatile CSB-1 will serve you for a wide array of applications. Even reduced rifle loads in .308.

I could give you some 9 Luger data, no .40S&W, though. I know a couple of guys who shoot .40 but have no clue on what powder they use for it, but they're just a text message away so I can find out for you if you wanna.

I agree with guncheese on both that you might be on the light side and that this powder likes to be on the medium to hot side of the load range. It will burn in a more clean and efficient manner. With light loads, I got some soot on my case's necks, indicative of low pressure.

I use copper plated TC 125 grains projectiles, and under them a 4.5 grain on CSB-1, just FYI. Velocities are around 1050/1060 fps in a CZ SP01 Shadow.

Thank you, Nordeste :)

If you want to post your data for 9MM Luger, it would be a good reference for us.
I placed a 5# order to give it a try & your experience with CSB-1 would help.

Hey Art..You are going to love that stuff.. Its really good powder.. I have a sheet that I didn't see many places so I will post it here..It shows CSB-1 to be a somewhat slower powder. Its safe and attached as a PDF...

RN, thanks for the pdf file from MAXAM - interesting to the materials the company provided.
Looks like it might work with my heavy bullet fetish

@ ART...No problem...I have had a 5 pounder for a couple of months and today was the first time I broke it out..Looks just like the photo and smells fresh so I think you will be happy.. I would venture to say that is one of the best deals out there on powder right now..

oh, it did just fine with 180grer's...:)

It shows CSB-1 to be a moderately fast powder

no not really according to info in the PDF
its in the slower 1/3 of the powders they sell
that CSB-10 must be whopping fast like faster than TiteWad fast!

they say you can run with Universal data
and it seems to be true, but almost a bit slower than that

CSB-1 so far has shown to be very even tempered but slow
ive messed with it in light .45 acp loads and its just to slow for that
i may round up some CSB-5 to try in the light loads
it could be that ill just keep my precious jugs of BE,Unique,231 and such may be kept for after the apocalypse.
and ill just run with CSB-1 and CSB-5 from now on

Thank you, Nordeste :)

Here you have my last results with this powder:

It's sold here under a different name (Optima A), but it's the same stuff. CSB-5 is faster than CSB-1. For the .45 ACP, I know guys who reload it with CSB-1 with no problem. I've shot ammunition reloaded with it and the shot was nice and pleasant, however, I have a feeling that as the .45 ACP likes faster powders, perhaps #5 will work better for it.

Whatever I find out about these powders, I'll bring it over here for you ;).

the fact that its on the slower side is what has attracted me to it
i shoot plenty of 9mm and 40 and its a awesome powder for that!
very pleased

clean, forgiving and meters like corn flakes!!

I have shot a bunch of csb1 out of 1911 45acp and Ruger Blackhawk 45 long colt. Both guns really like it. I like shooting it. Clean. Soft recoil. Just fun to shoot. My long colt just absolutely loves it with a 255gr bullet. Loves. It. I've shot a little over a pound so far and will be getting a 5 pound jug next. I haven't found any csb5 locally yet but when I do I'm gonna give it a try. From what I have been reading the shotgunners really like the csb powders so I'm gonna load up some 12ga loads with it too.

Well..It is good stuff and the rumor is that it will be commercially available in the USA..It would be nice to have a new line of powders to choose from..I really like this stuff..Its about the cleanest I have found..
