Go to http://www.tssa.net and click on the 'forum' link and PM Irv. Ask him about Randy Cain. He knows him very well. From what I have discussed with Irv, he is one of the top instructors around.

Logical,

I trained with Randy -- his 3-day Handgun 101. I can't say enough good things about it. Randy is a very nice, very approachable guy. His skills are amazing, even though he won't brag about himself. In addition to being a master gun handler, he is a champion marshal artist as well.

The great thing about Randy is that once you train with him, you become part of the Cain "extended family" -- a great network of people.

I recommend Randy highly. I will be training with him again later this year in Florida.

E-mail me or PM me if you have specific questions.

Thanks for all the replies...sounds like a go.

Their site is not real informative about what to bring...I assume maybe I'd get more info once I register....but I'm guessing a high capacity auto is the only way to go? I have a Taurus PT-99 that I shoot well but it is a little big for my hands and I never carry it. I carry a SP-101 3 inch .357 or a small auto (Guardian .380, should have a Rohrbaugh 9mm by the time the class comes) for CCW. Is there any opportunity to do some or all of the class with something like them?

I assume you are talking about Tactical Handgun 101? Which one?

Don't wait too long to register -- they always fill up. And yes, you will get a detailed e-mail with what to bring once you register. I can't find my e-mail or I would have sent it to you now. Tell me which class exactly and I will give you a better idea what you need.

As for the gun -- I struggled with this as well. I asked Randy before the class and he said -- bring what you carry. Now... that being said... I can't see you getting the most benefit out of the class with a really small gun -- i.e., a Guardian G-380. Same with the R-9... I am not sure I would put my gun through that -- i.e., 600 or so rounds, dropping mags in the dirt, etc.

I took the class with a 9mm SP-101 and I was very happy with it. Granted, I had the added speed of the moonclips, but I kept up just fine. I did not feel like I missed out on anything. The only part of the class that didn't really apply was the malfunction clearance session -- and Randy actually loaned me a 1911 for that part so I would have something to do. Randy is very knowledgeable with revolvers, so wheelguns are not a problem.

Now... that being said... Randy is from the Gunsite school of thought and lost of people there will have full-size 1911s. The rest will probably have Glocks. You will take some good natured ribbing in the nature of-- why can't you carry a real gun, etc.

At one point we did a drill where you had to shoot two plates, speed load, and shoot two more plates. Two people went at the same time and whoever finished first was the winner. I beat the guy I was up against who was shooting a full-size 1911 -- because I hit every plate with the first shot.

In the end, I think I earned a lot of respect for getting through the class and keeping up with "just" an SP-101! :)

Go over to TSSA's site like I pointed out before and sign up and PM Irv. Super nice guy and can answer any question you have about Randy's classes.

I'll do that TarpleyG...thanks again. Yes, I am talking about the 101 class.

I haven't taken a class from Randy, but I know him.
I am certain that any class he puts on is well-constructed,
reality-based, and an exceptional learning experience.

Randy is one of the trainers who is in the business for the
right reasons. I recommend him with confidence.

At Southern Exposure in Lakeland, FL?

No...up here in Michigan...Bay City.

Gotcha. I have no info that is range specific then.

In general, you should bring your carry gun (and a spare if possible :) ), any spare parts you might need, your carry holster, a carrier for your spare mags or loaders, as many mags or loaders as you have, at least 600 rounds of ammo, a flashlight, your range safety gear, and a blanket for lying prone.

Other stuff to bring is food/water, a chair, mosquito repellant -- that kind of stuff. My car was loaded to the top with stuff I thought I might need.

No one does the basics better than Randy Cain. I always try to make it to Randy's classes if they are within 6 hours.
You'll get a lot out of his class.

He is the real thing.
I actually took a class where Randy was on the firing line next to me as a student.

Another Thumbs Up for Randy Cain.

I've taken several Handgun 101 (shooting is about the basics. When I lived proximate to Lakeland, I took one whenever my schedule allowed), an advanced handgun and a carbine class from him at Southern Exposure in Lakeland FL. OUTSTANDING in every way.

It sounds like this may be your first class, and you won't find a better foundation for your training. Randy is a gifted instructor, a talented shooter, and hell of a nice guy.

HIGHLY Recommended!

Give us an AAR once you return from class.

I didn't see anything on his site about the costs for the different classes, just a mention of a $150 deposit to book the class. Anyone know what they charge?? Lakeland would be doable for me as it is almost a straight shot across the state from where I live. Might be a good option for me to get some training.

I have taken a couple of his classes and he is great. I always learn a lot from him, and I enjoy his dry sense of humor. Randy is a great guy to learn from. Ask him about the "cats in the cemetery" incident if you take the class.

Another vote for Randy. I've taken multiple classes from him at the Swamp, (my wife has, too) and he is really outstanding. All the classes I've been in have repeat students, which says a lot about him.

Warning. Taking classes from Randy is like a drug addiction. Be very afraid.....I'm going through withdrawal right now because it's been months....I'd rather spend three days shooting, sweating, and swearing at the Swamp than doing almost anything else!!!

Most of his three day classes in Lakeland, Florida cost around $400 plus ammo, etc. Don't know what they will cost up your way.

Go for it!!!! .

Ed- The prices are on the "Schedule " page if you scroll down.....kinda choppy site but I did eventually stumble across it.

Tuition for most 3-day courses is $400. Tuition for 2-day courses is $300. The Close Quarter Tactics course conducted jointly with Steve Tarani is $425.

logical,
Please post of your experience with Randy when you have completed it. I always enjoy hearing from others that attend.
