Last weekend I attended Randy Cain's 3 day Tactical Handgun 101 at the Southern Exposure facility near Lakeland, Florida.

It was excellent! Randy is a top notch instruction and a master at diagnosing the problems with your shooting. The three day class covered all basics, including general marksmanship, shooting on the moving, shooting from various positions, proper drawstroke, shooting from retention, night shooting and flashlight techniques, team tactics, and more.

Randy teaches other places, including Gunsite. His site is www.cumberlandtactics.com. It was great to take his class at Southern Exposure, who can offer the courses for less than other venues.

I don't think Randy gets the national exposure that other instructors do -- but he should. If you take this class, I promise you won't regret it!

DD,

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I have attended the TH101 class twice. Randy provides so much info you really have a hard time processing 100% the first time thru. My second trip, I was already familiar w WHAT he was teaching that I could focus on the HOW.
I agree, Randy does not get the exposure other instructors get. But, Randy doesnt like to 'toot his own horn'. That's why whenever questions arise about who to go to for training, Randy is #1 on my list.
Was your shoulder sore after the night shoot? :neener:
Were you ever caught being a 'window likker'? or 'sleeve biter'? :D

I was also in Randy's December TH101 class (my second). I agree completely with ddgator and slydlockt's evaluation. Randy is an outstanding instructor--he makes you shoot better than you ever thought you could.

I shot next to ddgator all three days. He did pretty good with his Ruger snub-nose revolver(everyone else was shooting either a 1911 or a Glock), but I think he is going to be shopping for a real gun soon. :D

I guess we are going to have to consider this a online class reunion. I too attended the Dec. TH 101 class and feel exactly the same way as the rest of the guys. Great class, a lot of useful information, excellent instructor and I can go on and on. Randy puts things in a way that makes them easy to perform and remember, a mark of a great instructor. Can't wait until I'm able to take his Handgun 2 class.
Take care,
Ralph

Good to hear from you Ralph.

Word of advice for anyone planning to take one of Randy's classes in the future--stay away from Ralph during the man-against-man drills. He's good!

Good to see you are here too, Ralph!

Alfa forgets to mention that I outshot him and his "real gun" in one drill with my little snubby! :neener:

And yes.. the 1911 fever tends to rub off. Randy letting me shoot his Colt didn't help any... :)

Another window-licker reporting for duty...

Echoing the sentiments of all the others, Randy is top-notch! I took the Handgun 101 class the last time Randy was in the Nashville area. Best investment I ever made. If Randy ever comes back to this area, I'm in! If not, I'll have to find a way to get to the Swamp. One class is not enough.

Also, I want to put in a good word for his students. IMO, Randy's students are a top-notch group of folks. He has an email forum for students only that I consult with on anything of gun-related importance. Always get feedback that I can trust.

Two thumbs up for Randy. #1 in my book.

Thanks guys I appreciate the kind words. You both did an awesome job in the class and showed a high level of competence with your weapons. DD, having to shoot every shot using Kentucky windage with your snubbie and making some of the hits you made was amazing. Alpha, same with you having to use a gun that was brand new to you because of your unfortunate circumstances and performing like you did was also amazing. DD, as for "real gun" - come on it's just a stock Glock 19, not a $1500 1911 - your going to hurt my feelings :D .
Take care

Hi Guys

It was a great class but then I expect than from Randy. You all did very well and you can see that multiple Tactical Handgun 101s help ingrain the "basics".

It is true that he doesn't like to hype himself like so many other instructors. He always says the "cream will rise to the top" and in his case it has. He is sought out for so many classes in all parts of the US I have trouble getting him to Southern Exposure for the 20 classes he does for me. I would like to get him more often (yes I am selfish) :)

Randy Cain is a true gem in the firearms industry. His ability always impresses me.

Hi Irv--I'm glad you've joined here at THR. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say thank you for giving us an opportunity to obtain absolutely first-rate training at such a reasonable cost.

I also couldn't agree more about taking TH101 multiple times. I think I got even more out of my second class than my first.

One other great thing about training at Southern Exposure is getting to know the other students. In both of my classes, I've gotten to know everyone by name on the first day. Irv and Watfa do a great job of ensuring that training at Southern Exposure is a friendly and pleasant experience as well as being educational. I'm looking forward to training there again next year.

Best,

Aaron

P.S. Irv--thanks again for helping me get the sights on my Colt squared away.

Everyone who trains at Southern Exposure, no matter who the trainer is (Awerbuck, Cain, Reitz, Rogers, Tarani, ect., ect.) becomes part of our extended family. We will do whatever it takes to get answers to your questions should any arise. You are all friends.

Duane

Bring the Little Lady back if you dare! :) For those who were not privy to the above, Duane's wife came out to the range to do some pictures. We were ready to shoot the hostage (baby) target and she asked if she could shoot it. She was first up, with no warm up at all and we put plenty of pressure on her. First shot with a snub nose revolver she solved the problem. You'll have to ask Duane how he did! :)

Ralph

Your improvement over a short period of time is amazing. Keep up the training.

Southern Exposure is a special place where all the students are made to feel welcome from the first minute on.

BTW I was on the Firing Line many years ago when Rich had the forum. I never switched over to this forum but Rich still remains a friend.

Thanks for all the kind words, you guys really make it all worthwhile.

Irv-
It's good to see you here.
I've had a number of pistol courses (although not as many as Irv), including 4 with Randy. I still try to figure out a way to go back to THG 101 if it is within 6 hours of home.

If Randy isn't back in Nashville at a convenient time, and the Swamp is too far, he teaches outside of Atlanta occasionally. Next class there is Feb 18-20. Unfortunately, I can't get that Friday off. He also has a class in Greeeneville, TN in late May.
