CZ 527...What Caliber?

I have a 527 in .204 Ruger. So does my brother. We shoot the heck out of them at p-dogs. In fact, both have way over 4,000 rounds through them and they are now at Weaver Rifles getting new barrels. Shooting a .223 is less expensive, but what a hoot shooting a varmint bullet at 4,000 fps with the .204.

I have shot only 3 rounds of a box of 20, and I don't have a chronograph to verify this, but here are some numbers:

Hornady 223 Rem 35 gr NTX: Muzzle velocity 4000 fps

Sirgilligan, w/o a chronometer how'd you come up with that velocity? Do you reload? That's a hot load, at least according to Hornadys manual. You are at .204 velocities there which intrigues me.

My vote goes to a 221 Fireball. You can reform brass from 223 cases and they last darn near forever. It's a very robust case and very easy to reload. I steered clear of the 22 Hornet due to the thin wall case.

221 is not available in the CZ 527. 222 is though, but I've done a lot of research on reforming brass and it looks very slow and laborious.

I've seen the CZ 221 Fireball on GB from time to time and was tempted to buy one. Buds has them listed but out of stock of course.

Most be a discontinued caliber because CZ's website does not show that as a chambering for the 527.

Those are the numbers on the box of ammo.

Thanks, I'll try and find some. As I recall, you'd only shot a few. Do you have a feel for the accuracy?

I have wanted one in 7.62x39 for sometime. Someday. Lots on that someday list to chip away at though :) of the choices I'd go 223

Well, we shot three rounds that day. It was me, my Dad, brother, two uncles, one nephew and one cousin.

Someone shot one round into a bucket of water to see how much of a splash.
Another shot one into a small tree to see if it would shoot through it. It did not.
But my Uncle shot one at the target. One shot, I asked him were we was aiming and he said at the bulls-eye.

I ended up going with 223 for the fact that i could find hardly any reloading components for 22 Hornet. Should be here in a few days.

I do, but not for 223 yet. I've been shooting steel case in my ARs but have been collecting 223 brass.

What twist is your barrel? If 9 or greater I suggest a Sierra 63 grain bullet with H4895 powder as a test load.

I'm pretty sure it's 1:9. My first test load will have to be Varget and some 55gr bullets I've had for 15 years. Varget is my only rifle powder I have currently.

Don't get discouraged if the accuracy is not there with a 55 grain bullet. My 223 bolt gun didn't care for mid-weight bullets but it shoots lights out with 40 grain and 63 grains and heavier.

I had one in 204 Ruger - awesome varmint gun. Wish I still had it.

I would work up some reduced loades for the 223. You can load it all the way down to near 22mag levels with Trailboss powder, and still have a solid reliable load density.

I got some Prvi brass a few months ago from Graf & Sons. Bullets are 35 or 40 grain V-Max. Haven't loaded it yet.

Hope you like yours as well as I do mine.

Got the gun in today and I wanted to share my initial thoughts. I wasn't lucky enough to win the wood lottery with this gun, but it still looks sharp. The first thing I noticed about the gun is how "handy" it is. It feels short, light, and quick to the shoulder. So much so that it reminds me of 22LR sporter. The stock is finished very nicely as well as the metal and bluing.

I put the bolt in the gun and noticed that it's not quite as smooth as I expected. But I plan to oil it up and work the action several hundred times to get the surfaces used to wearing together.

Next, I had to check out that trigger. In the normal mode, there was a tremendous about of pre-travel. You could literally see the trigger moving backward before it would break. The set mode was pretty much perfect. Luckily, the manual provides good instructions for removing pre-travel, over-travel, and also pull weight. I removed the action from the stock and adjusted the trigger and removed all of the pre-travel out of the trigger. Now it is MUCH improved. I tried to lighten the regular pull weight, but there is a nut on the adjustment screw that I assume locks it in place. I could not make any pull weight adjustment because for the life of me, I could not loosen that jam nut. So the pull weight will have to stay the same.

After taking the action out of the stock, I can see why the guns are affordable. The metal that is hidden is heavily marked with tooling and chatter marks. But it's hidden once you put the stock back on, so "out of sight, out of mind". I did run into a major problem after I put the action back into the stock and snugged the action screws down. The major problem was that the magazine would no longer eject. It's like it was wedged in there so tight that I literally made my fingertips sore from trying to push the mag release while trying to pull the mag out. I ended up having to remove the bottom metal to get the magazine out. I found that when I initially tightened the bottom metal back up, I must have put in some kind of bind. I slowly and equally tightened the front and rear action screws this time while occasionally seating and removing the mag. I alternated from and rear action screws and got them both tightened to 25ft/lbs of torque equally and now the mag inserts and removes without any problems. I about lost my cool there for a minute...actually I did lose my cool, but I was able to troubleshoot and correct the issue.

I had a Vortex Diamondback 3.5-10x50 scope and I thought I would just give the factory rings a try. I didn't expect the rings to work with the scope since the rings are Medium height and my scope objective is 50mm. But I mounted the rings and tried the scope and it was a perfect fit! Big kudos to CZ for including a set of rings with the rifle. Out of the box, this rifle is mounted with an optic and ready to rock and roll now!
