CZ Scorpion (VZ61)

Hi, I am debating getting an old school VZ61 Scorpion pistol and eventually SBRing it. They were made in .32ACP, .380ACP, and 9MAK. I definitely want the .32ACP just because that's the variant that I always think of when I think of the VZ61. However, between the .380ACP and 9MAK variant, what would you get? Of note, how do these run suppressed as I may get thread their barrels and suppress them? Thanks!

I like the .32ACP version too for it's more "authentic" caliber but I have little if any .32ACP or 9 Makarov ammo and plenty of .380ACP ammo for my pocket autos. So essentially I would go with the one that I already had the most ammo for. A quick look at one of the online auction sites turned up quite a few in .32ACP and one or two in 9 Makarov.

I have one in .32 ACP. It's a joy to take to the range. I was in the same boat as bannockburn, but the .32 version was all I could find at the time I was looking. The fact that I got it for under $500 on a sale just sealed the deal.

Of the two you mentioned, I would probably go with .380 - this coming from a guy who owns 9 Mak guns, but just got rid of his last .380. I say this because factory .380 ammo is slightly easier to come by and the VZ61 ejects out the top. When I shoot mine, brass hits the roof of the range and goes raining down everywhere. Since I reload, this is a bit distressing, although I haven't started reloading .32 ACP just yet.

I'm not sure you will run into a ton of people who have experience suppressing these guns, but any of the three calibers should suppress just fine. The real issue would be finding a purpose-built suppressor for 9 Mak. In that case, suppressing the .380 would be a no-brainer for that purpose IMO.

If I were getting one, I'd go Mak because I already reload it. I don't think I'd want to reload .32. Skorpions surely are nifty! I hope I'll get to see photos when you get yours.

I find my 32acp pistol is at least as fun as a 22LR pistol. I'll SBR it one day, but first it needs a rear sight, lol (bubba milled it off to attach a sight rail off the back of the gun, yuk)

I'd get one in 32acp. The mags are cheap, very reliable, and original. The 380s use a straight polymer mag that's only sourced from Czechpoint to my knowledge, and really ruins the iconic lines of the gun. 9mm mak is kind of annoying simply due to the not-actually-9mm bullet size that makes reloading components and barrels more expensive. The smaller 30-cal bore size will suppress much better than the other options, while also not cycling the action nearly so hard as those with higher momentum do, which also helps keeps thing quiet & comfortable. I understand that silenced VZ61s run quite nicely, and are almost absurdly quiet even with smaller cans.
