Daewoo: Will it ever catch-on?

Daewoo is a very, very, very large company. They're the Korean equivalent of a Tyco, which makes everything.

They make everything from memory chips to gigantic container ships and supertankers.

I wouldn't mind having one of the 5.56 Daewoo semi-auto rifles.......look pretty nice.

Anybody have one or shoot one?

...Research before statement is a wise thing. :D

I saw those for sale around here many years ago and like the Croatian HS2000, it seemed like alot of gun for not much money. They were all over our gunshows and around 200 bucks. When I finally thought I'd purchase one to play around with...it was like they all disappeared.

I handled several 9mm versions. Yes, they did seem well made and a deal for the money.

At 350 dollars...no way - ain't buying one. I can get a nice used PT92 Taurus or CZ-75 for that and they are more established and proven 9mms, but for 200 bucks or so, I'd have rolled the dice, but it seemed like all of a sudden they dried up.

My main CCW is a Daewoo DP-51C, and I love it. Fast action mode is perfect, and allows for a variant of cocked and locked that is as fast as a browning design, but safer by far. The hammer jumps straight back to single action when You take up the slack and drop the safety. I dont have any issues with it and have complete faith in the import rounds I load it with I use Augila IQ Slugs, and concentrate on 10m and closer as a range.

Half elf, you described the "fast-action" better than me. I alternate my carry between my .40 and this 51C. I am on the hunt for the DH45 and will go to Korea if I have to...:D
Roscoe: That gun-toting dude is my favorite "terrorist".

Initial accuracy issues

I remember when I first heard of Daewoo handguns back in the late 80's (perhaps the early 90's) some gun rags would sing the praises of these "quality" handguns and rifles. However, one reoccuring theme concerning their handguns were reports of mediocre accuracy. I understand Daewoo aggressively addressed this issue and shortly after produced handguns that were on par with handguns of American and European manufacture, but I suspect the brand-snob-powers-that-be in the gun rag world had already assigned the damning "nice-but-flawed" nomenclature to Daewoo handguns and never truly gave the company a chance to redeem themselves. Besides the lack of aggressive advertising targeting the (American) civilian market, I'd think the initial reports essentially torpedoed Daewoo's handgun debut.

But hey, I could be wrong... perhaps it had something to do with the black helicopters and dissected cows. :)

I don't know much about their pistols, but if they're anything like the rifles they'll be very reliable guns.

I have a Daewoo K2 rifle in its original configuration. It will continue to shoot circles around an AR long after the AR has gagged on tree pollen.
It's what the AR should have been and slowly becoming with gas-trap uppers.

Unfortunately Daewoo rifles are a victim of the first pos Bush's EO banning them from import.:cuss: :banghead:

I like it, but its' not as prevalent as before now. what happened? Century Int'l Arms was selling a buch of them a while ago.

Another issue is the magazine. Where do I get some 15rd mags? I heard S&W 59 series mags would work, but I got one and somehow it hang 1/2" longer.

The S&W 59 series mags work in the DP-51, but they do stick out a bit more -- but not 1/2" (1/4" or 5/16").

They can be adapted to work in the DH-40, as well -- if you open up the feed lips a bit.

I had a DP-51 which I traded away. It was a superb tack-driver, but had other guns I was shooting more. Kinda regret it, now. (But it would probably still be setting in the safe.)

I now have a DH-40 which is quite good, and found a couple of 11-round mags for it. (I don't think you'll find anything more than 12, no matter what.)

The Fast Action trigger is a real sleeper in IDPA. Hammer down starts that are really SA starts is an unfair advantage in IDPA. <grin>

These guns look and feel like S&Ws built by SIG. Nice guns.

Have an American company buy it, call it 'X-treme', and it'll sell.

Worked for that fine little underrated Croatian gun.

Very true Skunky, very true! Too bad many that love and adore the "X" gun don't know it's unaccepted past. :D

Funny how service and support goes a long way to making something acceptable and popular.

I've little doubt if someone like Springfield picked up the Daewoo line it's do a lot better.

What can I say.

I'd almost hit the 100,000 mile mark with my Daewoo Leganza before I managed to smear it nose-first into the median of I-40 one rainy morning. It needed to go to the shop once in that time, comfortable, handled great (want video of me racing it in Solo-II? I have them), powerful enough. I'm a fan.

My Daewoo TV is nearing the 20 year mark now, still works fine. Little 13" jobber I keep on top of the refrigerator for my morning news.

My Daewoo pistol/rifle... I don't have one yet. If I ever get the opportunity, I'll fix that :)

Call me crazy, but I think Kimber imported the Daewoo's at one point. I seem to remember a forum member directing someone else to Kimber for spare parts.

I've handled a couple at gun shows, in the past year or so, and was impressed with the quality. I'd love to get a chance to shoot one sometime. It's a shame I didn't have the money at the time, as they were only priced at $200 :(

I saw one at the last show I went to. Neat pistol indeed. If I wasn't set on buying an XD I would have bought it. The dealer was asking $285 with two mags.
