Daisy 880

I ordered 1 from MidwayUsa today it was 20 bucks are they a total crap shoot ??
Some have said they are pretty accurate for short range pratice and opinions ??

I've had one. I'd say expect some fun short range practice. I'd sit out back with the kids and shoot old license plates and coke cans with it. With pellets I could reliably hit the license plate at 30 yards....the coke can not so much.

I've several but the last one I got because my daughter took it away from her husband as she thought he was not responsible enough.
He's a good guy but I still laugh about it.

My first 880 was from around 1990 and though it had a plastic stock, it had a metal receiver and barrel.
I had a thing with sniping crow back then and the 880 that I had yielded some amazing hits out to 30 yards easy.

I loved the thing.

These days, I don't kill what I don't eat, but the 880 I bought a couple years ago out of nostalgia appeared to be made entirely out of plastic except for some critical parts that have to be metal (barrel sleeve and such). I wasn't impressed with it.

I picked two up last week and got 'em today. The 880 was my first "gun". Used to shoot it in my backyard in Chicago. Yup, Chicago. Yes, I am old. That air rifle could shoot through steel cans & 1/4 inch boards like butter.

Yes I wish I had got my Grandpa's 880 . I looked at one 3 years ago and wound up with a Remington 66.

I have owned them for years back when they were metal the newer ones are pretty much all plastic (what isn't these days) but in all honesty I still like them over all the rest . If you put a decent 4x32 scope on one you would be amazed on how accurate they can be ... I shoot mine from 30 to 50 yards yes that's right 30 to 50 yards and on a good day ( no wind) I easily get about 2" groups with your occasional flyer. Tip, dont shoot BB's out of them and use decent pellets to . They tend not to last as long as the older ones several thousand rounds is all you can expect out of them before some repair is necessary ... But what do you want for 40 bucks or so .

I bought one 6-7 years ago, and I'd consider it marginal. If I wanted a really good air rifle it wouldn't be a new 880. There's some awesome rat and pigeon shooting videos on YouTube from guys shooting some very accurate and powerful air rifles! I don't know what guns they're using but I'm sure they're not cheap.

With pellets, they are going to be very accurate. With steel BBs, not so much. The BBs have to be significantly undersize to fit down the steel bore without jamming and that's not good for accuracy.

When I was a kid I remember shooting copper plated BBs out of my Daisy pump-up. When the lighting was right one day I could see the BBs doing all kind of odd things on the way to the target. I shot a LOT fewer BBs and a lot more pellets after that.

You might try some lead BBs if you really want to shoot BBs. They're the same diameter as lead pellets (larger than the steel BBs) and will actually engaging the rifling properly. Just make sure that they aren't too large to pass through the feed mechanism/"magazine" of the airgun in question.

BB's are the best way to learn the proper application of Kentucky Windage.

My 880 doesn't even know what a BB is, I've never fired one through it, only pellets. Maybe if I sprung for a good scope, the accuracy might be acceptable. The scope it came with is totally useless, and no matter how steady I rest it shooting with irons, the repeatability is just lame. At 20-25 feet, they'll all hit the bottom of a soda can, but I'd be happier with a quarter-sized group.

Lot to expect for $20...

The Daisy 880 will be a fun plinker, but moving up to the $100 range there are some great values like the QB78D in CO2 (Crosman 160 clone, needs only a little trigger attention) or the spring piston Ruger Airhawk (a nice RWS 34 clone with a very nice trigger).

I seldom fired pellets from my 880, primarily bbs, and only the zinc plated "Quicksilver" bbs as Copperhead bbs seemed less accurate. It may have been all in my head, but it seemed Quicksilver worked better for me.
