my 10-year old daughter and i went hunting this weekend on her youth, doe-only tag. we had a ball! it was her first ever hunt for any critter. she was a real trooper, and a pleasure to hunt with:

obviously, i am very proud of her! she was composed and cool under pressure. a single shot from her rifle did the deed.

we celebrated w/ ice cream tonight - nothing like a hot fudge sunday to chase the mosquitoe bite itchies away!

hope everybody's upcoming hunts are every bit the success!

FANTASTIC! Way to go Dad!!!

My 11 y.o. shot her first two deer last year and I am STILL beaming with pride... both of them shot with a 270 at apprx 75 & 100 yds in the heart. Yeah... i know what you are thinking. A 270 for an 11 year old??? She never felt the recoil... she was WAY too excited.

The crazy thing is, deer season starts on Halloween this year and she told me that she wants to skip Halloween to hunt on opening day. I think I've created a monster. ;)

Great times... :D

Took my 11 now 12 year old out last year, he got a doe and a real nice buck. Unless your child has done this we can't explain how good and proud it makes you feel. As an old gentleman once told me, "If you hunt with them, you won't have to hunt for them." Outstanding job to the both of you.

Congrats to you both! I CANT WAIT to make a similar post. My daughter's still new so it's roughly 10 years away yet, but she has some camo jammies! She just started eating meat, and she loves elk:D Anyway even with all the pics of the monsters people post I enjoy these ones the most. Again congrats to you both. I know the best times I've had outdoors are the ones spent with my old man, and I wish you many more. Thumbs up!

congrats especially to your daughter. Looks like a great girl, and knowing how to shoot is a great skill for her. Good Job on the parenting!

Congratulations to you both. And especially to you "Dad" for carrying on the great tradition of hunting. My Daughters first deer was a few years ago but it still seems like yesterday to me

That is just outstanding - good job on raising a good kid - for her to be patient at 10 is a real testament to her ability to concentrate. AND first hunt is a success to top it off! It does look like a savage - what catridge did the trick?

fellas... thanks for all the kind words. it was an unforgettable moment! and, as surjimmy mentions, the feeling has to be actually felt to try to comprehend!

jake - we started her in camo jammies, too. a very good friend of mine drove to minnesota to get to cabela's, got the pj's, and drove back to give them to her the day we announced her birth. at the time, there were no cabela's stores in s.d. (now there are two... how times change!)

jrspicer & winslow - she is shooting a savage 10 gl in 300 wsm. the cartridge is downloaded to hot 30-30 levels w/ the 150 hornady. if you follow this link there are a couple other pics and a pretty good look at her rifle/scope: www.baitshopboyz.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17923&PN=1
if you look at the gun, you'll note it is a left handed gun. she is a lefty, i am not, so make no mistake - this is her rifle. my wife and i presented it to her for her 8th birthday. she enjoys the rifle quite a bit!

my daughter and i are very active shooters, and shoot nra high power and south dakota shooting sports association sporting rifle matches. i've always shot a lot, but she's been pushing me to take her shooting more, and she's the one that got me into competitive shooting.

anyway, thanks again for the kind words, fellas. the hunt is my favorite hunting memory - and i've got two more kids still coming up (one more girl and one boy). i am sooo looking forward to 2 more days like this in the next several years!

You are absolutely right. I need to get a camera (sugguestions appreciated) as .351 is old school and doesn't trust salesmen. I got a hog last year with my .303 Brit. and have pictures on my neighbors camera, but I need someone with a lot of patience to show me how to get pictures from the camera to ya'll. My favorite deer rifle is an older marlin .30-30. I have killed a lot of deer with it (missed a few too). Nothing I've ever handled felt as good and shouldered as quick as the marlin.

I'm working on a load for my .303 for deer/hogs. I'm looking for that majic load that will group well and still have enough power to reach out to about 200 yds.

cameras are almost as confusing as the world of riflescopes!

my wife ended up with a nikon d-50, which has been discontinued and been replaced by the d-40 and/or d-70 (i think - i don't stay current w/ cameras).

the camera is an slr and very user friendly, and the software package is serviceable for most people's purposes. her camera set her back over $500 at the time of purchase... however, it has been a great camera and i think it was a good purchase.

as far as the 303 goes... i've never even touched one, but if you find that load, feel free to send some good juju my way for a 243 i'm starting on!

My youngest son who is 19 swears by w/w ballistic silvertips 95 grain. Nothing else will do for him. He and our neighbors kids go to North Carolina every year to deer hunt. Coulter, the youngest, is the worst shot of the bunch. Last year he was using my .243 and killed a doe at a measured 427 yds. with a head shot. He was aiming center mass as the deer was running broadside. I can't tell you about the "amazing" shots this kid has made on deer. He makes head shots when aiming for the heart. The kid's all think that rifle is blessed. I finally insisted that his parents get him a .22 so he could practice his shooting skills. He's a great kid and knows how to skin a deer or hog as good as most folks.

Here's my son's shot last year, he was 11. The deer weighed 260lbs on the hoof, and 200 dressed. IMG_0673.gif

well, i keep hearing how hunting is dying off, but i don't think it is here. if anything, there are more hunters here now than before.

kids still grow up hunting here - it is just the way it is. i feel bad for those parents and kids who don't get the opportunity...

i'm patiently waiting for the locker to call so we can get some fresh venison and deer sticks! my daughter, however, is not patient about this at all, and asks everyday if the locker called yet.

Congrats for you daughter and to yourself. Fine looking doe it has cool eyes. If you are like me you will be beaming from here to next christmas and beyond. Good job to you both.
