Much appreciated all.

We will be doing a pretty light hike. I generally wear a vest with some odds and ends stashed in: small med kit, way to make a bit of fire, emergency whistle, compass, solar charger for phones, spare bug spray, a multitool, etc.

My back pack will mostly carry a bit of food, some water, good bug spray, a towel. Thankfully im out of the toddler stage with my daughter:D I'll carry the 9mm on my belt at about 1pm and folding knife in my pocket.

Ticks have already shown up ion Western Michigan,,, Kid playing nearby had to go to hospital to have tick head removed last week..

Enjoy Michigan. It's an underrated outdoor State. Just have two pistols between you and wife. Almost all big game will run from you. It's the two legged animals you have to worry about.

Now I hate "Bear Threads". I dont plan on needing to stop a 10' tall Kodiak hopped up on meth after eating a tweaker it found in the woods:D

Now that's just funny!

I used to backpack a lot. It's all about weight, even day hiking. I would take the Pitbull. Like Armored Farmer said, it's a 99 percent chance that you won't need it.

Ah home of the Michigan Dogman... go big or go home :) I would upgrade the pack in case... spending an unexpected noght in the woods is bad enough but with a wife n kiddo's... no such thing as over prepared!
