for my next gun I have been having trouble deciding, I've narrowed it down to 2 diferent guns, the ruger gp100 and the springfield armory 1911, please pick one and tell me why you like it better.

1911 - Ol' Slabsides' thin profile is great for concealed carry, on top of it being one of the best service pistols ever.

GP-100 (quality .357 Mag whhel guns in general) - Ideal gun for rural & wildnerness carry when doing whatever to enjoy the great outdoors, and also makes a fine service revolver.

Pick the gun based on how you plan to use it. They're both great firearms that will serve you well. They compliment each other nicely and between them will cover most folks entire centerfire handgun needs. Get the one that you'd use most now, and save for the other next.

both great guns. i picked the 1911 because i'm a big 1911 fan plus i'm more of a semi auto guy rather than a revolver guy. but i got a buddy who has the ruger and it's great. check em both out and pick what you like better.

I picked the GP100 but.... I'm a big big fan of 1911's but for a just plain shooter without a lot of care and feeding get the GP100.

I would select the 1911 over the GP 100 as long as we are talking about the SA loaded or perhaps even the champion. Otherwise I would opt for the GP 100. Both are fine guns and you will be happy with either.

The 1911 of course. Because if you don't have one you need one. Beware they are like a drug. Once you get a taste you have to have more.

Wow, you don't make it easy

They are both great pistols. Being that you did not give us any other info, I'm just picking the one that I would rather have if I didn't have a handgun. In reality, you couldn't go wrong with either of these two, but I'm an auto guy, and particularly a 1911 guy, at heart so I chose the 45.

Howcome you didn't have selection 3, both. I've been going to buy a 1911 for about a year. Bought a .22 to shake some rust off until I found the 1911 I wanted. 3 .22's and a 9mm later, I bought a GP100. Great gun. Will probably end up with a 1911 in a couple of months, if something else interesting doesn't get in the way.

This is a tough one...and, despite what my handle indicates, I'm going to pick the GP100.

Here's why: I have a Springfield 1911, the bare bones GI model, and I like it fine. But, every time I go to the range I think to myself, 'I like firing this gun...can't wait till I can get a Les Baer/Wilson Combat/SA TRP (fill in the blank).' I like the 1911 platform: how it works, how it feels in my hand, how it breaks down and goes back together, and what a nice big round it puts down range. All that said, I like shooting the GP100 better. It's accurate as all get out, fits well in my hand, and is just a pleasure to shoot full magnum loads with.

In conclusion, I feel I need to upgrade my 1911, not my .357 magnum.

i picked the GP100 here, but man i really love both of these. i think i find myself liking to shoot revolvers more because they are more fun, more action. you dont just stand there and squeeze the trigger when you're doing single action. i really want a 1911 as well. these where both high on my list of first guns just 3 months ago. I went with a Ruger Single Six.

Those are both great guns, as well you know.:fire: AND it is just plain mean, mean I say :cuss: , to make us pick one of those wonderful guns to go home with you while the other has to stay and sit in some gun case without its buddy! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON YOU!!!

:neener:

If ya don't have either, I'd go with the six shooter.:D (That's what I did) then save up and get the Springfield:D . I've been down to Camp Perry and they bring their whole display of 1911's and they are all really nice lookin'!!!
My 1st 1911 was the Kimber Heritage, great gun!

Have fun with whatever you choose!!! Oh, you can shoot .38/.357 with the GP!

Mike

Bite the bullet! Buy both of them! :D You know you want to. You probably will and be glad you did!

Its what I would want to do. If wifey chimed in...well...wouldn't happen.

Mark.

given my user name I'm needless to say a big fgan of revolvers and have never owned an auto, but I like both of these guns and being that the whether around here is usually cold I were a trench coat so I could easily hide either one and I plan on doing so one of these days (after income taxes are done:D ) but I'm having trouble deciding which because as you guys said even though they are in different catagories they are definitly equally matched. I originally wasn't going to get a 1911 until I saw this http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=137411&kwtid=214691 I like the small of the back position.

They are both good weapons.

The SA 1911 is great, I want one too, however it is nothing special. Its just a good entry 1911 for the money. The GP100, especially a 4" full underlug model, is one of the nicest, robust, generally kick-ass revolver out there. Strongest revolver design in .357 Ive ever seen.

Basically the SA 1911 is a just another good 1911. Most companys make one and its nice to have, but the GP100 is one of the best examples of a modern steel firearm on the market.

I like the small of the back position.

There is a reason that the police dont let cops carry their cuffs in the small of the back anymore. Back injurys. You may think "when's the last time I tripped or fell?" but it only has to happen once. Stumble once, get unlucky and where you should only have injured your pride youll get a chunk of steel jammed into your spine and damage a disc like a few too many police did. DONT "SMALL-OF-THE-BACK CARRY.

both picks are pretty good imho. i voted gp100 though. just because i like em alot and want one myself.

I voted GP 100 mostly because I just bought one, and I love wheelies but....

when I was picking up my new GP 100 I sure was oggling a Springfiled GI they had sitting next to it!

both good

While both are good, one is a proverbial piece of art..

and I guess you know how if voted..

Easy decision

Both are excellent. However, the 1911 can use a .22LR upper and thus decrease the cost for practicing, and you would be practicing with the very same receiver as is used with the .45 ACP. These uppers pay for themselves in ammunition cost savings in less than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

For the simple fact that springfield makes a quality gun and backs it up with a great warranty.

You tell me which barrel lengths for either you would buy, and what pistols you already have, and then I will vote. Particularly the bbl length on the revolver--it makes all the difference in the world what I'd buy.

Depends on your intended purpose for said gun...

I have 2 SA 1911's...A 4" Champion, and the 5" GI-45. Right now, the GI-45 is my 'Bedside Table Companion'.

I don't own a DA .357, so I pick the GP-100 in this poll. Have a .357 Vaquero & a 50th Year .357 Blackhawk...need a nice DA .357

Oh yeah, forgot to mention I need a nice DA .357

Got Both!

I have a 1911 Springfield Classic. 45acp. It' in the safe.

I have a .357 mag. Ruger GP 100, in a Galco Highride pancake Holster,
on my belt.
I did carry a Colt Commander, for a few years, until I retired.
I moved to the Country, rural location.
Out here I either carry a Ruger SP101, .357mag or a Ruger Gp100,
all day, every day.
Depends if I'm going to town.

Buy what you want to. Carry what you like the best, at the time.
Change when you are ready to.
I don't even choose sidearms, for DSW-Dear Sweet Wife.
I would never try to make this kind of Choice for anyone.
Have Fun
