Has anybody used something like this for steel target storage?

I'm putting together a rimfire range (subset of my high-power range) and I'm looking to store my rimfire steel on my dam, rather than go back and forth to my target shed. I've got about 20 pieces of steel for rimfire now, mostly silhouette knockdowns, but I'm looking to get a set of the NRL22 targets. I'd just leave the Deck Box on my dam during the shooting season, then move it to my barn during the winter using the pallet forks on my tractor. I'd also leave a ground tarp and shooting mat in it during the season.

I'd put it about midway down the picture. Thoughts?

Most of my steel stays in a shed on my pistol range:

I try my best to just keep steel out and painted. Stuff like stars I have tubs for the plates.

I did make a trailer for a friends USPSA club so everything could be put in one place for storage and driven from bay to bay to set up stages though. That’s probably the way I would go but I deal with steel every day and carrying sheets of it around isn’t fun anymore.

Base frame was a $50 CL boat trailer.

Even if I used the box you have found, I’d put it on wheels with a hitch. Only thing worse than moving steel is moving steel in many trips. Once and done isn’t as bad.

I’d probably start with a “job box” vs a plastic box designed for seat cushions, to keep them from blowing off the deck.

Seems like it would work to me. Mounting it on a little trailer to tow behind an ATV would be ideal. Are you setting your targets up on that road?

Down the sides.. into the same backstop I use for my pistol and 50-220 yds Rifle:

I'm trying to get ready to shoot the NRL22 stuff. Luckily my normal bench area to the backstop gives me 21 yards with another berm with swingers behind it that are at 300.

It's actually easier just putting the box on blocks then using pallet forks. That way I can put it on the shelves in my barn. I'm running out of horizontal room, so I've started going vertical. Since this is just for .22LR steel, we're probably talking about 50lbs max.

Like JMorris, I've got a bunch or rifle steel that stays out on stands, and I keep them painted. Those are usually pistol TGTs that got cratered/dimpled. I'll start looking for a smallish jobsite box.

Some job site boxes are forklift capable Chuck.
Paul,

I know, they're just significantly more expensive than a deck box.. and I'm still only looking to store about 25-35 pieces of 22RF steel. I just checked out Craigslist KC and there was 1 listed used for $350. This might be one of those Wal-Mart Deck box now, Job Site Box when I find one kind of things.

Right now I'm dragging chit to and fro.. Well loading it into the UTV and unloading at least. :)

That sounds like a good plan, I’d use these though, in a barn. nothing rodents can chew on or take up residence in. Just fork lift from the pallet rack into the bed of the UTV and back.

Or even and open top wood box, if you don’t have enough weight to destroy it.

Curious if you remember how much they were asking for that one?
It was $330 or $350 when I looked at it.

I keep mine in a heavy duty plastic tote with a lid. And just pick out what ones i want to take to the range.
It's the approach I'm taking, sort of. The Deck Box holds a little more, so I've got room for the stands and a tarp that I use for a ground cloth.

Two thunderstorms so far and it's still there... I did surround it with cinder blocks (also a NRL22 shooting prop)

Guys,

Finally got around to taking a couple pictures to give you an idea of what I was thinking of. "Chuck's improvised .22LR NRL22 Practice Range Storage Box" (Patent Pending):

The cinder blocks, perform double duty, keeping box in place and are also shooting props. The inside has just enough room for some of my .22LR TGTs , a KYL rack, tarp etc.:

So far, so good. No uninvited guests, did add moth balls to discourage. I'm going to make a simple rack inside so I can store the steel after it's been freshly painted.

As of now it sure as hell beats carrying to and fro..
