Hi, I bought a used 22 rifle that has some deep pits in it. I sanded some of the smaller ones out but it would deform the barrel too much to try this to the deep ones. What can you use to fill that will take a cold blue other then TIG welding? Is MIG to hot? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Would like to reblue. I did an old single 12 game in duracoat black that came out great but have not seen a duracoat that looks like a blue job.

+1

Pictures sure would help.
One mans 'deep pitting' is another mans excuse to draw-file them out.

deep in barrel

here is a photo of one of the deepest pits in the barrel. As you can see I filed some already but it will be to much to keep at it. I tried some JB weld but it wont accept bluing and I want to blue the barrel if I can find a filler. I don't have a tig but do have a mig welder.

What is the Model of the gun, and what do you intend to do with it ?
If it is a Common, non collectable model, it can be filed out and refinished for a shooting rifle.
The pits can be done properly, and the rifle will look fine.
But you do not just go Sanding , or Draw filing at random.
There are ways to do it and the barrel will not look like it was filed out.
Your stamping and lettering will probably be gone in the reshaping, because you have to Blend in the rest of the barrel around the bad areas.
So if you want to have a Refinnished Shooter, seek out someone with the proper skills to refinish the gun.
If it has collectors Value, leave it alone.

TIG welding is in order. Take it this summer from a NRA Summer School that is one week long.

exterior pitting.

Strip the sights off the barrel and clean up the pitting in a lathe. Take fine cuts following the barrel contour about an inch at a time and finish off by blending the cuts with a fine, well chalked file and then emery to required finish.

Appears to be poor filing technique at work here, too.

MIG will not work. TIG or micro TIG only. Gonna cost. Nothing else besides steel is going to blue, so those are you filler choices. The bluing over the welded pits probably won't match the rest of the barrel due to material and hardness differences.

Proper draw filing may remove the pits or they might be too deep to completely remove.
The NRA summer program is a good suggestion. Sign up and learn the right way.

Cold blue is not bluing and does nothing to passivate the metal. It is a temporary solution until a proper blue can be done.

thanks for the info. Can you give me more info on this NRA summer school? I am interested for sure. I know the filing looks bad. I started with a course file and was going to work down until I was onto the sandpaper. plus this is a micro picture so it is super close up. Thanks for all the help. It is not a collectors piece by no means. Just something to work on and improve my skills.
