Anyway I've shot tons of guns, mostly rifles admitidly, a decent amount of pistols, and own a good shot gun.

I'm interested in hunting deer this year as season is comming up, but the big thing here is in Illinois it's shotgun or bow. Don't own a Bow, and would rather shoot something I'm familiar with, which is a shotgun. Killed many-a birds, and clay pigeons with shot, but honestly never shot a slug... not a one.

I guess I should get a case of slugs and sightout and practice, but man I'm new to deer hunting. First time would be this year if I end up doing it.

But honestly, I'm MUCH more used to the theory of a rifle, I have no clue how a slug preforms or to what range. And also, Do I need to bathe in g-d deer piss? I have 40 acres of land of my Dads I called and asked him if I could hunt on if I decided to do to, and he said yeah as long as I give him some meat. etc. etc.

Anyway, educate me. Remember, I don't have a rifle.... I am limited to a shotgun. Which honestly... SUCKS. I like rifles :(

well, first, if all you have is a standard shotgun smoothbore barrel, i would limit my shots to 50 yards. there is enough energy to shoot much further, but without sights, and the lack of rotation, the slug isnt going to be very true for very far. YES! PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! but remember to quit several days prior to the hunt, so your shoulder can heal up some. you wont hit anything if you are flinching from the pain of a really briused shoulder from the recoil. you will need to get quite close to the deer, so you will need to do everything in your power to eliminate as much of your scent as possible. since you are on private property, wear as much regular (realtree, mossy oak, etc.) as legally possible. you will probably still need some orange. just make sure that you can wear it on a part of your body that does not move much, and can, and will be seen by others. also, NOISE MATTERS! you will need to be quiet, sit still, and have quiet clothing. then there are all the real hunting things that you need to know. that is so extensive that i am not going to write a book here. if you need help with that part of it, go to the library, or pick up some good outdoor magazines, or find a mentor. i do not know when your season opens, but you really have waited until the last minute to do this. it might be better to think about doing it next year, when you can be well preparred. also, check your laws, in michigan, we can use a muzzle loader in shotgun territory. you may be able to do the same. modern muzzleloaders are really pretty fine rifles. and of course, you may be able to get a rifled slug barrel for your shotgun. i have no idea what your budget is. i can tell you this. venison is, pound for pound, one of the most expensive meats you will ever eat! GOOD LUCK!
