I know that one very well known instructor uses a double barrel as his road long gun. It is quick into action from an unloaded condition, and is legal anywhere except D.C.

I keep a loaded 20" Baikal Coach gun as my HD gun.
I imagine if two rounds of 00 buck won't stop the intruder, nothing much will. Plus, I imagine if I use both rounds on the first guy (effectively blowing him in half), the ones who remain probably won't stand around to watch me reload.
