So yesterday I stopped by my LGS. While looking around a spot a pair of 2nd issue, 3" Colt Detective Specials.
First one is nickel, with the correct grips and probably 97% or so. Fired, but not much. no box or papers.
The second one is blue, with 3rd issue grips + a set of Pachmeyers. It's probably around 90% or so. It's been shot & carried, but not abused. Still locks up good and tight, like a Colt should.
Well, I've always thought that a 3" DS is about the perfect carry revolver around, and they are getting harder and harder to find. I've been wanting one for a while.
Normally I would have jumped on one, if not both.
Here's the problem. My wife has been ill the last couple of weeks, so right now, short term, the household income is down to one, instead of two. Got to pay them bills. (She's better now and back to work today) Add to that Christmas is coming fast.
I mentioned this to the clerk. He says no problem. "I'll put it in the back with your name on it (either one) and pay me when you can. After the holidays is fine."
I took the blued one. It fits my wants better and is less expensive. I did give him $50 to hold it, and will probably pick it up next week, but it's nice to be treated that way.
If anyone is interested in the nickel one, PM me and I'll give you the shop info. (I have no connection to the shop other than as a repeat & happy customer.)

You don't see a lot of 3" Detective Specials around. I picked up a 3" DS barrel and had it installed on my Police Positive. It makes for a great packing pistol:

Lucky,

When money is tight, it is nice to have a shop that will let you do a lay-away for 10 months (some do around here.)

I have found the more toys one has... the less they really appreciate the things.

And instead of buying junk, or common guns, glad you found a real nice Colt.

Keep it well oiled!

Nice find, as I really can't remember seeing all that many 3" Detective Specials in all my visits to the local guns shops and gun shows. Definitely want to see photos once you pick it up.

I've been a fan of the Detective for a LONG time and the three inch version is my favorite all time revolver. They just seem to balance better. I've been acquiring them for quite a while.
Congratulations. Nice to know there are still shops like this out there.

I was lucky enough to find a DS a couple of years ago. It came out of a retired cops estate and while it had been shot, it looked like it hadn't ever been carried at all. It's not a 3" but the standard 2" barrel makes it a little shorter for concealed carry. I hadn't seen one for sale before this one came up and haven't seen one since. How lucky you are to have been able to have two to choose from.

There was some dings on the left grip that have since been repaired.

The gun store owner did you right, and I think you will be pleased with your DS.

Colt needs to get off there patooties and start churning out Cobras and/or Detective Specials again! The world needs a high quality, 6-shot .38 (or .357 as in the Magnum Carry) revolver for the exploding CCW market.

Love them Defective Specials!

Especially the light weight models called the Cobra.

My DREAM revolver is a DS with a less than 3" barrel. If the barrel is much over 2.25, is it really a snub?
