Did Cowboys have Semi-Autos ( trigger warning )

Utah has made great strides in my lifetime but I remember my dad as we crossed the border saying, “Now entering Utah, set watches back 50 years.”
downtown SLC still reminds me of something from the 60’s movies, Back to the Future town

I agree with that! I driven through New Mexico a few times. Look like the World left it 80years ago.

It would be more like it won't arrive for 80 more years.
I believe you can see Australia from the top of Sandia Crest

The Sandia's are sort of pooty mountains even by NM standards and with a view of, well, not much of anything. My wife and I always thought it would be nice to ride the tram up to the top of them but the drawback was having to go to Albuquerque to do it.

Once we got horses we figured out one horse eats 10 cows worth of hay. And they wont even eat that low browed first cutting. Only good stuff will suit them. Lol

We herded cattle on atv as well. The horse works better though, a good horse knows what's going on and is already changing directions before you even know it's needed. Of course a bad horse is already changing direction when it's NOT needed.... or a snake shows up... or it smells a bear.... or a grouse flushes.....

As far as guns and horse, id imagine a horse that is shot off of is pretty well deaf pretty quick. If you had big old ears and someone put their muzzle right between them and fired a few times, I can't imagine it wouldn't do permanent damage quick. I've hunted from horse back and had a buddy (also a heeler in calf roping) who did a lot. There is also the advantage that you can let go completly of a horse and not crash while you shoot, Atv... not so much Because of our roping and riding and shooting, My screen name being "cowboy" is a direct result of a teacher and a girlfriend choosing my first email back when email was new. I said "I'll never have no internet... never have no computer, can't afford it" so they set it up and chose my name. Lol.

I do not now, nor have I ever considered myself a cowboy....I did however pull a calf this week. I had a Glock 10mm on. Blasphemy I know.

The cavalry used to fire a shot between the ears and deafen horses .What they cant hear doesn't bother them at all .

SASS Mounted shooters commonly provide horse size earplugs.

W. Churchill or a contemporary wrote of cavalry ponies with "tattered ears" from lance, saber, and revolver.
just imagine gun fighting from horse! SKILLS

Some old white guy name of Winston reported "...shot three men for certain and probably another... (Mauser C96) is the best thing in the world." Letter to his Mother who had bought him the pistol.

That was in 1898. The American West was not the only place things were Wild.

If you were a Gunfighter Cowboy in Say 1875, New Mexico Territories. And; C96, Colt 73, Winchester repeater, 1911, and P08.. was available, would you keep it REAL and go with the 73’s or go with the Semi’s?

Going back to the Titanic, a Colt model 1900 would be a more fitting pistol for a wealthy passenger.

Or a Colt Pocket Hammer 1903

Interesting article on guns of the Titanic:

Titanic’s Pistols

101 years ago today RMS Titanic became the first and only Ocean Liner to be struck and sunk by an iceberg. Onboard, under the care of her First Officer, she carried a number of brand new Webley revolvers. The short barrelled .455 calibre MkIV Webley Revolver had been issued to the ship by its parent company, the White Star Line. While the issue of weapons on merchant ships was not uncommon increasingly, use on liners was limited by this time. They were officially issued to combat piracy, prevent mutiny and for use if the situation on board ship was no longer controllable by the ship’s officers.

The pistols were distributed amongst officers during the efforts to get passengers into the lifeboats. It was feared by the Captain and Chief Officer that disorder might break out among the passengers once they realised they were unable to get into a lifeboat. There is no evidence to suggest that any of the pistols were used, there is some evidence to suggest that First Officer Murdoch may have fired a shot into the air to regain order at one of the lifeboats he was supervising but this is unconfirmed.

Another officer, Charles Lightoller, claimed at one of the Titanic inquests that he used an unloaded pistol to move some ‘’Italians" who had gotten into one of the lifeboats - taking up places needed for women and children.

RE cowboy boots. I finally found a pair of western boots that is comfortable to wear with a rubber sole:

No weird sizing either. I wear a 10.5 shoe / boot and these are 10.5's.

1873 Winchester .44-40 with an 1873 Colt .44-40 would be equivalent to an XM-5 and an M17 Sigs today !

Since you brought up your screen name, is that the Creston next to 41?

And to answer the question... If I were a gunfighter cowboy, well, I wouldn't be a cowboy. But if I was a cowboy and found myself in a gunfight (unlikely still today) I would be equipped with the best that is convenient to carry (just like today). In 1875, it would probably be a cap/ball Colt. I've heard they shoot as fast as lightning, although they reload a little slow. I am not particularly quick to upgrade my arms, and it would be cheap.

pa. dutch horse and buggy and two of my cowboy type firearms, a 1892 winchester rifle and a colt bisley in 38-40.

Shot or hung on the spot. Beef was anything but rare.

He said cowboy gunfighter. Cowboys don't have time to be gunfighters......Unless they're fighting off rustlers.:D
I swear the West is not what I thought it was

many cities today have more firearm deaths in a year than were killed in the old west in the same time .

Most people think the old west was the way Hollyweird portrays it. Nothing could be further from the truth. If any modern day people were to be transported back in time 99 % of them would be crying for their mama's before the day was out.

Between 1859 and 1900 there were maybe 10 bank robberies. Between 1866 - 1910 about 1000 attempted train robberies. Between 1856 - 1910 about 450 stagecoach robberies.

Yeah, watching a western last night i told my wife and kids that I don't see how they dealt with the rotting teeth and the pain that comes with it. I'm at an age where teeth start to become an issue and it's no fun at all
