I know next to nothing about shotgun shells and was wondering what the difference is between regular shot and buckshot.

I am sure it on the internet but I would rather ask people who can actually explain it.

I am asking as it relates to a defensive round.

Numbered buckshot is larger than the same number of plain shot. For instance, #1 buckshot is .3 inches in diameter. My chart does not have #1 lead shot, but "BB" shot, which is the next size up from #2 lead shot, is .18 inches in diameter. #4 buck is .24 inches, while #4 lead shot is .13 inches. So, buck shot is not quite twice as large in diameter as lead shot. Being larger and heavier, buck will penetrate more (including into or through walls) but will have fewer pellets in a shell. Personally, for defensive purposes I don't go larger than #4 buck, out of concern for over penetration and the neighbors. Others will have different opinions based on their preferences and circumstances.

Got it, thanks

What made it seem odd to me is the buckshot ammo I looked at gave the number of pellets and the regular shot gave the weight of the pellets so I figured there had to be something different.
