Dillon square deal primer problems

Hi all I have an older much used square deal. I loaded over 1K .38 special with little primer problems. Then I switched to .40S&W and loaded 20 or so and the issue started. It will prime a case or a few then not put one out to prime then they start falling to the floor. I have loaded several thousand on this press and this has got me buffaloed. I replaced the blue tip on primer drop tube after emptying it and cleaning it, took out the plunger that had the flat spring steel behind it. It will work good for 15-20 then hang up and I have to remove primer system. I will call Dillon tomorrow, but if anyone has a fix, let me know. I am thinking of sending it back for an overhaul. I've got 7 SDBs so I have a bit of experience with them. It sounds like you've done everything for now. Call Dillon tomorrow (be prepared for them to call you back) the tech will maybe have another answer and if needed you'll have replacement parts in a few days.

Yup. They will either advise an adjustment, send you parts, or if necessary you can send it in for correction.
I sent one back twice for a broken frame. The second replacement frame was beefed up, so they can learn, not just give away parts.
They have a paid overhaul but I think yours qualifies as a warranty repair.

Graphite lube has solved that issue for me. Clean the slide up real well and then a shot of dri-lube graphite on the friction surfaces.

The plastic orifice tip needs to be replaced (blue= small is part #14024/red=large is part #14003). Note that it is keyed so it drops in place correctly. Before you drop it in though, remove the primer slide and make sure the primer punch/cup is at the right height, if they are too high, that’s what took out the last tip and will instantly destroy the new one. Last thing and was the key to priming system happiness is to not tighten the knurled primer shield cap. I just run it down to contact, not even just two finger tight, zero distortion on the plastic tip and once you slide the low primer alarm over it can’t back off.



If #13979 is not flat up against the housing remove the screw and flip it over, reinstall.
