Do XDs rust badly?

I just went to a gunshow a couple days ago and handled several pistols to make my final decision abuot what I'd ultimately like to buy, and the XD-9 is what felt most natural to me, and since I've heard so much about it that's good, I decided I'll be getting one.

But now that I've discovered XDtalk.com, I've noticed they actually have a forum there called "Rusty Tales" where people go to talk specifically about the problem of rust that XD owners have! Sometimes people even report that their guns rust before they even have a chance to fire them. Even rusting after being oiled with rust preventing oil.

At the same time, the XD is really givng the Glock a run for its money. So is it a great gun, or cheaply made rust bucket? :confused:
 
The older ones have a rust problem. But it is hit or missed evrn with the older ones. The ones made after the spring of '06 or there abouts. Have a new finish that is similar to GLock's finish. When you pick out yours, ask to see the little bag with the fired case in it. There will be a date when the pistol was fired. That should give you a pretty good idea of when it was made. With in a few weeks or so.
 
Some early XD's had a thinly applied finish that was prone to rusting. Over time, the folks at SA have worked with the factory in Croatia to improve the quality of the finish. Also, they've recently introduced a new finish for the XD that is similar to the finish used on Glocks. It's much more durable than the original.

I have two XD's and have never had any rust issues. Keep it lightly oiled like you would any other steel gun and rust should not be an issue. If you do experience any rust, SA will refinish if for free under warranty.
 
A friend of mine has the XD .40 subcompact. I don't believe rust has been a problem. However, the finish does not seem to be a durable as I would like it. It fairly quickly began to show holster wear. That is the only thing that has kept me from getting one.
 
No rust on mine. Oil it with a good oil and you won't have a problem. No more problem than any other non stainless gun.
 
My XD9SC has some light rust on the slide. They aren't cheaply made rustbuckets, they are a great gun and just had a problem with the coating on the slide on early models. I asked SA about it and they said send us the slide, we'll put the new coating on it and send it back to you for free.
It hasn't bothered me enough to get around to it yet. I only see the rust in certain lighting conditions.

I will, just as soon as Glock fixes their funny grip angle and adds a grip safety so I don't have to worry about shooting a hole in my leg every time I holster. Until then, I'll pass.
 
The wife has one that she carried back home and now in the land of rust and rot (aka Florida) and has yet to have a speck of rust on it. Then again, she isn't some kind of undisciplined slob of any kind and actually cleans her weapons so that's a factor.
 
Check the date on the envelope of the fired shell casing. If that date is within the last nine or ten months you have nothing to worry about.
 
New or old the things rust. Rust. Rust. If you want something similar in a polymer with the same capacity and same basic ergos get a FNP. They are stainless whether blued or not, you can get one from $4-500 and they come with 3 mags. Alas, they do not come with a throw away XD gear POS holster though.
 
The first generation (HS2000 - first 18 months of being XD) had BLUED slides.

They have since gone to Melonite finish on their slides.


As we all know blued guns rust if you don't take care of them.

Melonite will not rust.

That being said I have an HS2000 and a first gen XD. I have never oiled either, never put any "preventative" substance on either. Never had any corrosion.

Except that Glock isn't the original. The Tenifer finish they use is made by Durferrit of Germany. It's also sold under the trade names Melonite & Tufftride. See paragraph seven; http://www.durferrit.de/en/unternehmen/firmengeschichte.htm

As has been noted many times here on THR Glock uses the Tenifer finish. Springfield began using the Melonite finish on all XD45s and then all other XDs imported from Jan 06 on.

Aren't you holding the grip and the grip safety when you holster your gun anyway?
 
By placing your thumb on the striker status indicator on the XD when holstering, you hand does not press the grip safety.
 
The finish on mine wear off after handling it in two days, not one single shot was fired. The edges wear a bit, more on the grip safety.
Well I don't expect much, it's an inexpensive gun. Many say the new ones has the finish similar to the G machine. Let me see it. I went to the shop two weeks ago, that was not Glock like finish.
 
the new xd finish (melonite) is chemically equivalent to Glocks tennifer.

i made sure that the xd i purchased had the new finish......

No, I hold the front of the grip with my thumb on top of the slide. My hand is no where near the grip safety.
