I find shoulder holster extremely useful for home carry. Generally I don't use it outside, but it goes great with a bath robe and sports pants with no belt.

The home defense gun is usually in a designated place but not on me.
I will definitely carry a gun round and about the house when testing out a new carry gun or holster before using it outside.

The thing about carrying is this: pistols suck at stopping threats compared to long guns, but they are always there for those surprise events.

And smart criminals don't initiate violence when it's expected. So the home invasion to worry about is the one that surprises us. Or the guy who comes down the driveway looking for directions who pulls a firearm. Or whatever.

So yeah, when I'm getting dressed I check the status of the pistol and put it on. When I go to bed I take it off.

If there's a strange 140lb dog upsetting my dogs by standing on their doghouse to get out of the rain, or a rabid animal, or scrappers assuming I'm not home, or whatever, it's there right where I want it if I need it (all things that have happened in the last couple of years).

I don't expect to need it, but a few times in the last couple of decades I've been very glad it's on me. And sometimes when I got the vibe things were about to go sideways I was unhappy I didn't have one on me.

So I learned. And I bought comfortable leather holsters I can wear all day, and comfortable gun belts that look normal. If I'm awake and I'm not bathing or engaged in particularly intimate activities, then I'm armed. And in those instances a firearm is close by.

Because the event that we prepare for is one that happens with zero notice, when we're otherwise pre-occupied, that offers us no time to grab a gun if it's not already on our person.

I am sitting in the living room with a light-enough-to-wear-all-day, but large-enough-to-shoot-well, single column pistol in an OWB holster, well concealed under my shirt tail.

Should someone follow someone else in through the door--any door--I will have it. Suould someone break in, I will have it.

When I go into another room, it goes with me.

When I return with a cup of tea in each hand, it comes with me.

I do not expect to need it.

One time when the back door burst open and I drew, it turned out to be a very strong wind, and a door that had not been fully locked.

When I leave the house, it is there. I do not expect to need it.

On Tuesday I mentioned on this thread that we live in a small town with an incredibly low crime rate. Yesterday there was a double murder (a shooting) in our downtown area. We average 1 murder every one to two years in our entire county and this just doesn't happen here, until it does. Being in a good area is not always going to protect you.

The reason I have a firearm near me is twofold the rancher whose property butts up to mine is building his cattle herd and there have been 6 calves born this week and it brings a lot of coyotes. We also found some big cat tracks and the Game and Fish guy who comes around says there is a panther in the area. The other reason is it is dark around here at night the only lights are from the houses and my night vision sucks.

It is really hard to understand NOT carrying in the house.
If it is uncomfortable, or inconvenient, you are not carrying properly.
Taking a gun off, putting it away, and then putting it back on over and over again, is an invitation for mistakes. Reminds me of the stories about leaving the house with an empty holster, an empty gun, leaving a gun in a random bathroom, dropping your SIG and shooting the dog, blasting off your cojones, etc etc etc ad nauseam . . .

Ah, the wonders of pocket carry. Put on the pants du jour, gun goes in front pocket, instantly armed all day. For my neighborhood, however, two-legged home invasion is far from the only reason to be armed in your house.

Who packs a handgun in their own abode? Concealment is no issue there. I keep my AR slung at all times and simply sling it behind my back when cooking or putting the kids to bed.
