Do you ever deliberately avoid THR topics?

Yep.
I try to avoid political discussions anymore.
I usually only succeed in making someone angry at me and there isn't really any way that you're going to accomplish anything via an online conversation anyway.

Now if I really wanted to do myself some good, I'd learn to never reply to anything I see in the classifieds.

Tourist, brother tune out what you don't want and move on.

Yes, you got it. That's what we're doing--or in my case, have already done. This is just the discussion, the aftermath, if you will.

A lot of these people have become my friends. Both on THR and on KF, we exchange PMs and e-mails, and about six of them (besides clients who have the business number) are close enough to have my telephone number.

These folks are not simple associates or pen pals. They are important people to me, and we discuss pressing life lessons.

The idea to simply "tune out" would be akin to cutting these people loose in a lifeboat. "Hey, guys, fun playing with you, but you're now a real downer and my life is too important to solve your petty woes." The people who seek out the values of THR would not want that. They could easily have the simpler lives of self-absorbed chairborne rangers on numerous other hobbyist forums.

I've learned that if I have a concern, so do at least 100 other people. I simply vocalized my plight. What you are reading is the sincere opinions of people of like mind.

I'm a sucker, I read them all. It took me 15 years to figure out this internet thing and the new hasn't worn off.

One question though, I was patrolling the mall with my perfect Glock, waiting for a purse snatcher, and an evil Obama ad got me wondering: When the liberals destroy the world and the aliens try to take it back, I was wondering which brand of AR I need and what caliber to get it in to defend myself against all the zombie cops on motorcycles?

Well, you're headed in the right direction, but clearly you're not using enough panache' and false bravado.

Your AR will never be "mall tactical" unless you utilize at least six or seven picatinny rails, numerous lasers, including flashlights and handlebar streamers.

Patches designating misleading unearned authority will help. But the real kicker is story telling, especially relating tales of bravery that someone else accomplished.

As for this new breed of "poser mall undead zombies" you're on your own. I'm have enough trouble lately trying to shore up my new classification as "poser mall ninja." I have fantasy problems of my own.;)

The ones I avoid have any one of the folowing or ideas pointing to the same in the title:

-SHTF
-(insert gun) used by (insert Service Branch) suxxors because its not made by HK
-What would you do if (insert any of the following: BGs, LEOS, JBTS, Leprachauns) are beating down your front door?
-Anything about homemade guns or explosives (I didn't get a degree in chemistry in order to give someone enough hints over the errornet to enable him to blow his fingers off).
-Threads that tout a 3rd or 5th party candidate who has no realistic chance of ever winning an election.
-Drug related threads- some people here get very sensitive and uptight about even the mention of why a ban on meth or crack can be a positive thing for society.
-NRA bashing threads.
- Anything mentioning building a sniper rifle for sniping people or for shooting deer or game animals at 900 yards.
-Topics on M4 carbines. There will be more brand fanboys on these than any other threads, and the Carbines aren't all that interesting to me.
- Any topic started by The Tourist (just kidding :D )

I avoid any topic where a person is discussing their own opinion rather than fact, as a person's opinion is seldom changed by the facts. You can show a person why their opinion is wrong using logic and facts, but opinions are frequently illogical and no amount of facts will change them.

Instead of changing their opinions, the person will frequently resort to changing the way they view the facts, or will ignore inconvenient facts.

I usually post, "leading question", if it's a newbie, who thinks that it's a question that nobody ever thought of before, I try to point that out, like would you shoot to kill or wound" but to answer yes, yes I try to avoid them, sometimes I just can't, lol, like the yellow shotgun post, I tried I really did.

Well thanks, but why do you refer to me as "mythical"?

T'was the box of "Lucky Charms" you were a'carryin' fooled me.

But my point is valid, sometimes even the guys I agree with write in such a bland fashion that it's painful to read. That, and no paragraph breaks makes even the best post a real chore to finish.

Let's just say I avoid 99% of threads any more and pick a few to respond to and move on. After a few years it's the same stuff over and over.

I wanna say...

I love THR. I love all the topics. I have no beef with repetitiveness. Topics are bound to be repeated. If it's very soon in repetition, I'll post a helpful link to the existing thread.

I don't read certain posts due to long/boring/weird content. I've learned over time of some posters who regularly post such content, and as such I tend to avoid their posts.

But I ldo love THR and the vast majority of the content. For my part I see no reason to...

THR is great and I like it here. If I ever do become disenchanted, I'll just stop coming here. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

:)

Aye! But you'll niver find me pot o' gold! (If you do though, let me know because it's been missing for a long time now. I'll split it with you.)

I must admit I get a kick out of the posters who think HiPoint is untrustworthy junk, but have never shot one, and maybe only saw a picture of one once.

Any SHTF thread.

Any video/computer/PlayStation game thread.

Any paintball/airsoft thread that isn't about their use as training aids for FOF.

Anything with a religious link.

Fanboy threads.

Agreed couldnt say it any better

I dont avoid any particular topics, but typically avoid posting in ones that are clearly getting bit heated, or that I have strong personal feelings about, or where somebody posted something that ticks me off. I like it here, and would like to remain here, so avoiding posting in a thread where I might post something that will just continue the arguement. I'd rather not get any warnings from mods, or even be associated with certain types of posts that show up in some threads, even if I didnt post anything particularly "out of line". I would rather just not have my screen name appear in some threads at all.

I admit it takes a LOT of self control sometimes, and I'm human and occasionally slip up like everyone else, but for the most part I think I do pretty well at staying out of some discussions.

and handlebar streamers
A silver one would look SWEET hanging off the hammer of my nickle plated Colt Trooper I inherited! Anybody know the best type of bit and super glue to use to attach it?

:D

Unless the thread starter is very new (say, less than a month or ten posts), I avoid threads with original posts that could be summarized
"I don't use the Search function."

I also avoid:

-- threads based on Lone Renegade / Lone Patriot fantasies, anti-government rants or recommendations of illegal activity.

-- threads based on or filled with specific predictions of the future behavior of unknown individuals.

-- threads in which people actively fight the idea that dealing with problems involves using your brain, not just the equipment you've bought.

-- threads about paintball and video games, apparently; I never even notice them.

I also skip most "News Flash!" threads.

I had a dial-up connection for years; I still have the habit of avoiding heavily photograph-laden threads. Nowadays, I purposely decide to read some of them...but only some.

Wouldn't it be nice.

Hey there;
Wouldn't it be nice if this was required reading on this forum.
Ya can't ask a simple question any more without a bunch of crap coming your way.
Ya don't get very far trying to get "Tech" about any thing either.

So I do not start any threads now and have not for some time.
I am not to old to learn, and have from some here. I have only been doing this stuff for 30 some years. Oh well , ya get what ya pay for.

Have fun guys (Moving on)...

Do you ever deliberately avoid THR topics?

Yes for several reasons....

• If its a topic I can't contribute anything to.

• If its a topic that I suspect will only lead to a thread lock due to silly pointless arguments between members. Sometimes all you have to do is read the thread title or the opening post to know that this thread is going to end badly and bring out the worst in people. Fortunately we have a lot of moderators that are good at detecting these kinds of threads early before they get too out of control.

• Threads that contain religious or political views. I would call myself spiritual but I'm not a very religious person in any way and I don't want to mistakenly offend anyone by expressing my personal views. Politics I just avoid because those threads are usually quickly locked anyway.

• I also avoid the topics of Competition Shooting, Blackpowder Shooting, Hunting and Reloading. I don't own any blackpowder guns, I don't compete, I don't hunt and I don't reload so I have no interest in these topics, at least not yet.

It would be heavy-handed to say "touchy," but this is an 'iffy' concern of mine. In fact, I've discussed it with some mods.

For example, in the real world, we have The Doctrine of the Reasonable Man. And I think it's a good one. If you're just about ready to sink your teeth into a scrumptious cheeseburger after loading padlocks for nine hours and long motorcycle ride which is now highlighted by a drunken townie belching threats into your ear, I consider it reasonable to stir him vigorously with a ash pool cue until he is the consistency of an emulsion which allows the effortless pouring of his remains into his double-wide. But I digress.

My point is that activity sanctioned in life should be the same standard for forums.

If some poser snorts at me, I should be able to use reasonable language to chase the little goober back into his mother's basement. If I catch someone lying, I should be able to expose him, his handcuffs of fantasy and his galleria of Purple Hearts.

Or if he simply insults me, I should be able to comment on his kin and their ability to arboreal brachiate.

To my way of thinking, if those actions are done to my face, then my actions should be allowed when done to my computer. Short of that, (and if we ever have serious problems) we should just develop a "troll hole."

And to be fair, I have a pretty good relationship with the mods. And as in real life amid my personnel files at corporations, I'm establishing a fair record of PMs which begin, "Dadgum it Chico, what were you thinking...?"

I avoid most threads which are very long that I haven't followed from the start. By the time a thread cracks 5 pages, it's usually not on topic any more, or has developed significant sub-threads that are hard to parse.

Flip side: all too often, I'll peek at why a given thread was locked way early - partly from morbid / dark-humor curiosity, partly to better understand what the moderators are thinking.
