Being here in Jersey there's really no other option but overpriced ranges with poor facilities so that kinda limits me. But when I used to live out in AZ I would go shooting up in the mountains and have a blast. So what do you guys do? Pay for a range or just find some deserted place and blast away?

I have my own property with my own private range. That's where I do most of my shooting.

The local club ($35 annual) has a crude range with pistol to 25yrds and rifle to 100yrds (they plan on skeet and trap soon) is actually closer to the house, I occasionaly use it if I tweaking a load or a gun.

Smoke

I shoot .22 on my property. I have a bench, a mountain for a backstop and home made target holders.

For all larger calibers I head out to Jawbone Canyon in the Mojave.
I take a table, chairs, cooler and a couple of home made target holders.

No poll choice for 'both'

in North L.A., 'A Place To Shoot' is a real nice facility, $100/yr last I checked.

and we have a second home / vacation property in the Sierras, there's an open / unregulated / free range nearby.

Pay for the range. I miss the days of living in BFE, where I could step out on my back proch and pop a few rounds off...

I go a little bit down the road, bring my own target frames and what not. The back stop is a mountain and i can go almost 800 yd out. Any time y'all want to go shooting Pm
me and we'll go.I live not to far from the Buckeye hills shooting range so i may go check it out also.

I have never shot at a 'real' range. The benefits of having (parents with) a big (300yd+) backyard.

I'm lucky enough to have a public Natl. Forest range near me. No dues required, but it's encouraged to donate towards maintenance at the local ranger station.

I also shoot pistols and rimfire on my own property.

Yikes I thought things were bad around here. I dropped my range membership last year cause money was tight and they ticked me off with their new "no guest" policy. I wasn't about to fork out $150 bucks a year to go to a range where I couldn't take anybody with me. How are you supposed to get anyone new into shooting??! The only alternative left is a couple indoor 25 yard pistol ranges, but they're getting pricey too, nearly $20 bucks a trip and one wants to force you to buy his ammo at like $20 bucks a box of .45acp.......NO THANKS. :fire: :cuss:

I, too, have the good fortune to live about 15 miles from a Forest Service range. Relatively B.F.E. and I'm usually alone when I shoot.

It's a rather nice range with target stands and a covered firing line complete with benches & tables. Everyone seems to take care of it pretty well, however there is evidence of the occasional idiot that ventilates the trash can. Still a great, and free, place!

You need an option for "both".

I go to the range to sight in a scope, develop a load, etc. Its nice to have benches, sandbags, cover, measured distances, etc.

But other than that, I enjoy going out in the desert to plink, too.

Like I always say. The range will show you what the gun/load can do. Plinking shows what YOU can do.

You know all those stories about idiots at the range? I pay $100/yr ($150 if you don't participate in 2 "range clean-up days") to shoot at our club, and you usually get a huge bay all to yourself. I haven't had to share one since I always go during the week. You can shoot pistol, rifle, shotgun and MG in those bays and set up a chrony or whatever. Nice, except it's about to get too hot to go for a few months! :)

Me Too

Like Valkman, I belong to the same club -- Desert Sportsmen Rifle & Pistol Club. It's a great facility, nice people.

Once you get 'spoiled' on shooting outdoors, you feel somewhat 'confined' if you shoot @ an indoor range.

Range. Not much choice around here. Some Colibri in the back yard. When I Have been able to shoot on a non-range it's been great fun.

I shoot at a range on property the company I work for owns, built by employees using company provided materials.

Sometimes I feel like being in A/C to shoot my handgun calibers during the summer.

Sometimes I feel like shooting my rifles and handguns, but during the summer, so that means 4:30 AM or so out to the desert with my steel target and other blastables.

And during the cooler months, I can go to the outdoor range and use the benches to shoot with my rifles and handguns.
