Do you top off the magazine?

sometimes mags that when topped off have NO room left in them will not latch proper if the slide is in battery.

Thank you Claude for bringing this up. this is most prevalent in ARs. I rather have 28 or 18 in the mag (I make it a bit easier) with the capability of a fast tactical reload. I usually fill the mag and don't top off with pistols.

Yes, I always top off my handguns.

Oddly, I never top off my rifles.

On the other hand, if I have a handgun, all I've got is what's in the gun and a spare mag, maybe 15 rounds total.

If I have a rifle, I have 20 or 30 in the gun, and another 100 in a pouch, so I'm less concerned.

Yup, I always top off also. In my full sized 1911 I need all the rounds I can get considering I don't usually carry a spare mag unless I think I may need it :uhoh:

I've always topped off mine. Being that my mags are only 7 rounds I figure that's the only way to go for me. I just started carrying a spare mag.

Oh yeah, I've heard to load AR mags to 28 before also. I think my dad did so in Vietnam.

Our department still goes by that "policy" on the AR-15. I've never had issues either way, but I have heard it can occur with some mags. So, it is 18 or 28 rounds for us, depending on whether we are carrying 20 or 30 round magazines (both are authorized here).

i have been told that the mag is less likely to jam if you load it full and let the slide take the round and chamber it, and then DON'T MESS WITH THE MAG AGAIN.

Also, one round never seemed like that big of a deal to me.

10,000 rounds through my current duty weapon, all mags topped off. Not a single malfunction of any kind.

I don't sweat it on the pistols.

Mark my vote for totally full to capacity.

I've never heard of springs wearing out due to keeping the mag full. I've had totally full mags in my Kahr, SA-XD & others for years w/o spring weakening.

I top off for a few reasons:

1) In my issue pistol it is regulation to do so.

2) In my personal pistols it is now well formed habit due to the regs on my issue pistols.

3) It is an additional round, and you never know when it could be the one that saves you. In other words I do not let gun-guruism, machismo, brashness, cockiness, pigheadedness, stupidity overcome the logic of having that one additional round available.

4) For legal reasons should I ever wind up shooting my firearm in a shootout. I can testify that there was absolutely no doubt in my mind how many shots I fired because simple math would figure it out since I am always loaded to capacity (or at least my pistols is that loaded, I only get that way once or twice per year). Sounds more believable to a jury or judge than to say -well this gun I load once less than capacity, this one I load to capacity, so when you found those bullet fragments in that innocent bystanders leg it must have been from the bad guys gun cause I only fired once and I hit the bad guy. But then the police do not find a bad guys gun and no powder residue on his hands, but the did find a fully loaded backup pistol on you; and they found a Glock 19 down 2 rounds from full capacity. Hmm - does not look so good for you. (If you cannot think of the type of situation on which something along these lines could happen, then you do not know much about how gunfights sometimes go down, how fragmentation wounds occur from ricochets and leve virtualy no ballsitics evidence, how bad guys guns disappear because of accomplices, and so forth. I would rather be believable from the get go, and convince them I knew how many shots I fired, and where my shots went.)

All the best,
GB

No, but only because I have noticed feed jams when I top off the magazine.

even on good brads, and otherwise totally reliable weapons, some of them just don't seem to behave when I top off a magazine.

I am specifically defining topping off as a full magazine +1 in the chamber here.

I don't normally top off the mag when I carry an auto-pistol because I often have to unload and secure the gun when I got to a "no carry" zone.

By not topping off the mag I can put the loose round back in the mag and not have it stuck in a pocket or rolling around the floor of my car. (Both things happened when I used to top off the mag)

Yes, I'm aware of bullet setback. I try not to remove and rechamber the same round more then two or three times. After that I set it aside to shoot on my next range trip.

In short, not topping off the mag is just a convenience issue for me.

13+1 topped off of 45 caliber goodness :)

I've tried to get that second one in the pipe but it just won't fit :uhoh:

Oh yeah, I've heard to load AR mags to 28 before also. I think my dad did so in Vietnam.

In My M16 Magazines in Vietnam we only loaded 16 rounds. Yea, they were that crappy.

These days, I use 28 rounds in the Stainless C products and Magpul Pmags. These are used in a Robinson Arms XCR. I will not own one of those widow-maker AR15/M16's.

Go figure.

bullet set back

+1 Trebor

my SD guns stay loaded in their holsters at home. but if i do have to jack the chambered round it gets swapped with the next in line automatically when i reload the gun. my SD rounds all get swapped (fired) when the clocks change.

ps. i watched 'our mrs robinson' last night--next up: jaynetown

Nope' . . . 1911 was designed to "pick one off the mag" . . . if I ever need it (again) & can't extricate myself from the predicament with 8, I likely should have never been there in the first place, & I'm right particular about the territory I frequent . . .
