Just got the news earlier tonight

By Jenni Dillon

Peninsula Clarion

A 28 year old Homer man was shot and killed Saturday evening by a man he met earlier in the day.

Mephiboseth Wilkinson died, apparently of a gunshot wound to the head, according to Alaska State Troopers. Leonard Wallace,47,also of Homer, has been charged with murder.

"It appears they met earlier that day at a bar in Homer,"said Dave Gilmore,an investigator with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation in Soldotna.
"They spent some time together that day and were in the parking lot of the Carl Wynn Nature Center when Wallace shot Wilkinson with a .22 caliber derringer that he had in his truck.

"I don't know why."

According to a press release from troopers,Wallace then walked to a nearby residence, knocked on the door and told a woman to call police because he had shot someone.

Troopers, along with an officer from the Homer Police Deparment, received the call about 7:45 p.m. and contacted Wallace at the residence, where he told troopers where to find the injured Wilkinson.

Wilkinson was discovered where Wallace said he would be,lying by Wallace's pickup in the nature center parking lot.

"It looks like he had atleast one shot to the head ," Gilmore said, noting that more information would be available after an autopsy.

Homer Emergency Medical Services took Wilkinson to South Peninsula Hospital, where doctors tried to stabilize him enough to be medevaced to Anchorage.

Wilkinson was declared dead around 11:30 p.m.,before he could be airlifted to Anchorage.

In the meantime, troopers arrested Wallace, who scored a .209 blood alcohol content at around 9:30 p.m.,Gilmore said. A BAC of .08 is legally intoxicated.

Troopers said alcohol is belived to have contributed to the shooting, but Gilmore said the incident doesn't appear to have been accidental.

"He meant to do it," Gilmore said.

Wallace was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, driving under the influence and fourth-degree misconduct involving weapons. He is being held at Homer Jail.

My sister is devistated by the loss of her only son. My mom grives with her. She knows what it's like to loose a child.

We still don't know why. It appears to be "just because"

magsnubby,

You and your family have my deepest sympathy as you mourn the loss of your nephew.

The death penalty might be too good for this guy. Instead, maybe he can spend the rest of his natural life in prison, living in a small cell with a much larger, and much more deranged man. If that's how he spends the rest of his life, may it be a long life.

You know, it's stories like this that make me wonder why booze is legal while pot is a crime.

Understand, I don't do either. Don't drink a drop (taste issue) and I don't need the legal hassles or possible addiction of anything else.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time. Times like these make me question my faith in man. NO APPARENT REASON...this person should be ripped open and tied in a field and let the animals feed.

Again, I truly am sorry for your loss.

This has less to do with booze (or pot for that matter), and everything to do with someone who's mentally deranged and/or who's simply evil-lots of people seem to have too much at one time or another (sometimes much more than that) and seem to manage not to murder someone with a gun. Make no mistake, there is evil that walks this earth.

Mags, if that's your loved one (it's not clear to me), I'm deeply sorry for your loss; I'll pray for you all.

Did the article spell your nephew's name correctly? It lists it as "Mephiboseth", and I imagine they meant "Mephibosheth", the only surviving grandson of King Saul, who was cared for by King David out of his loyalty to Mephibosheth's father, Jonathan.

Not a very common name, certainly, but one filled with meaning as it shows that loyalty transcends death.

I pray that your family is comforted during this difficult time, and that justice prevails.

I couldn't agree more with that last!

However, it's booze that seems to lead to violence more often. A lot more. In some people, it "takes the brakes off" :scrutiny:. Moreso than a LOT of chemicals, not just pot.

Not that I think banning it is a good idea! Not hardly.

It's just...

Heck. I dunno.

This is probably the wrong thread to discuss it.

Very sorry to hear of such a tragic event. I wish the best for your family during your mourning.

CC.

Jim, I've never heard of someone commiting such a heinous act after smoking the wackyweed, but it's a daily news brief where alcohol is concerned.True, evil exists in some men's hearts, trouble is, it's very hard to predict when it will manifest into reality.

First off i want to say thanks to everybody. It means alot to me and my family. Right now i'm just trying to get my sister through this.

All i can think about now is that scrawny little 13 year old boy who wanted to move to Alaska someday " So i can hunt and fish anytime i wanna." All he ever wanted to talk about was hunting and guns, which was just fine by me.

We still don't know why he did it. He's schedule for court Friday so maybe we'll get some answers then.

Sistema,
Yes, they spelled it wrong. Right after Seth (as we called him) was born i asked my sister where she got that name. "From the bible".

Maybe now he's free from the demons that were consuming his soul.

RIP Seth

Standing Wolf: sorry, but that's a bad analogy.

We are discussing chemicals that have specific effects on the brain. The link between alchohol and violence is extensively documented...or you can just ask any cop their opinion :scrutiny:.

Pot doesn't have the same effects.

I'm not in *favor* of pot, and would never touch the stuff myself . Never have, in fact.

But...I have to question obvious idiocy in government.

Magsnubby, my prayers are with you and your family. I'll send a few downrange tomorrow in memory of your nephew.

You have my condolences and I understand your grief and anger...

As to the rest of you, I assume you would have no problem waiting for a trial and a verdict of guilt on intentional murder before we srtart feeding people to polar bears and animals, hangin em, eviscerating or leaving them on the tundra...

Oh, Im sorry I forgot, the rule of law and concepts like innocent till proven guilty etc etc only apply when some "gun activist" gets busted :barf: :barf:

For all you bloodthirsty folk sorry we have fair trials here in Alaska

Wild,

I would imagine it has to do with the fact that people want justice to be served. We know this guy is guilty - in an ideal world, we would throw him naked into the tundra. Of course, in an ideal world, he would not have killed. I do not believe anyone is actually calling for a suspension of our trial system. I believe they are simply expressing their anger. They want to punish the person who did this - someone DID do this - of course we all know it is up to the courts to find out who did it, not us.

I hope that this person's punishment is as horrible as possible.

It's not the booze.

It's not the gun.

It's the person.

There are people who definately should not be drinking, and alchoholism is a horrible disease/addiction. I've seen it destroy the lives of two friends.

However, do we really want to be a country that bands anything that is abused by a relatively small portion of the population?

We tried that. Prohibition was a failure.

Restricting the rights of many because of the misdeeds of a few appears to be a mistake we are doomed to repeat over and over again.

We know this guy is guilty - in an ideal world, we would throw him naked into the tundra

We do? Really...How do WE know that? Because we read it in the papers and unfortunately and horribly and sadly one of our emmbers family is the victim?

And myabe your perfect world involves a slow lingering death for people who commit homicide, I however have left the 16th century and now reside in the 21st
