During that time the FBI was issuing 4" thin barrel S&W Mod 10 square butt. A lot of PDs were issuing 4" heavy barrel Mod 10. For smaller revolvers the S&W 36 and Colt Dick Special were seen the most.
I would venture to say the Colt Trooper MKIII 357 Magnum. Many agencies had 357 Magnums with 38 Specials in the cylinders. I believe the CHP even had some Colts made in 357 Magnum but, issue ammo was 38 Special.
Probably the correct answer lies with the S&W model
36 "Chiefs Special"; but I remember seeing an awful
lot of Colt "Detective Specials", and its variants the
Cobra and the Agent.
