And not reload? My God, I saw a box of 500 ammo in the gun store today for $56.95! For 20 rounds! How anyone could pay $3 a round (with tax) is beyond me - I've bought a .454, .44Mag and a 10mm only because I reload. I could never afford this stuff! :)

Dear Valkman:

There's already "reasonable" priced Brazilian MagTech .500 S&W Magnum 400 grs. SJSP ammunition on the market already. This ammunition is also properly C.I.P.-approved. I don't know about the prices in the U.S. but in Germany a 20-rd. box is more like EURO 19,70 retail (= circa US-$ 23.00 to 24.00). Of course, that's still far from inexpensive, but affordable.

I assume that most guys owning a .500 S&W are purchasing a couple of boxes of factory ammo in order to get a "feeling for the thing" and to have some empty brass cases available for handloading, right?

Regards!

Well you are sort of right. Most of the guys I have heard of shooting it save the empty cases and use them as fuel barrels.

For reloaders and ESPECIALLY casters the .500 is cheap to shoot. StarLine brass is 35 cents in quantity and very durable.

I have over 2000 rounds through my 500s and have never bought a single round of factory ammo.

I doubt that I'll ever buy factory ammo for mine. Midway delivered my dies and brass yesterday. Need to get some bullets from Berry's and I'll be good to go.

I just got my PC500 6.5" last week. I have only put 20 rds through it so far and plan to shoot it today. I don't plan to buy factory ammo for it. Starline makes brass, several people make bullets, and I can reload it on my Dillon 550. Why buy commercial?
By the way, I love it.

Does anyone shoot the 500 ?

Yes I do !!

Unfortunately I've had to buy factories for now. But as soon as I get dies and the other assorted goodies I will really go out and do some serious shooting.

So far,its fun to shoot. I have the BFR not the Smith.I found,at least for me the Smith seems a little nose heavy for me. To each his own of course.

Penetration with the 440 grain bullets seem pretty decent
:D
