were there any typos in that link because it doesn't work for me, and i would like data for 231 in 9MM and .38/.357 calibers

Tac, get the straight poop at
http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

Please note that Win. 231 is a fast burning powder meant for target loads and service loads in non-magnum calibers. You will not get full power in magnums with it. I could not even get .357s up to major power factor for IPSC (a 158 gr bullet at 1108+ fps) without getting into sticky extraction.

Sorry, guilty, they do not show Win 231 in .41 magnum there, but Lee No 1 does.
It shows a MAXIMUM of 8.8 gr W231 for a 210 JSP .41 Magnum and
a MAXIMUM of 7.4 gr W231 for a 210 gr lead .41 Magnum.
Because of its fast burn rate, I would not use anything but a -10% starting load, maybe a bit less.

Jim...I'm getting 1100 fps +/- a few using a 140 grain SJHP bullet from a 2 1/2" barrel and I'm not even max'ed out on powder weight...(7.6 to 7.8 gr W-231 and CCI-550 primed [Using WSPM things start to get sticky though]). It would seem that a longer barrel would net a faster bullet...

The Bushmaster:
I do hope that during this attempt to not piss each other off over a trivial brand or shape of a particular powder/manufacturer that someone has taken the time to informed the original poster and all other beginners that may be reading this string that one should NOT go by the look of a powder to determine the powder type and use...But to read the label on the packaging and use a loading manual of some repute when reloading...

Exactry, because it looks like 231 doesn't mean it is. It also looks like my bottle of Titegroup and HS-6.

Here's what my W-231 looks like.

If I were unsure about a powder I would toss it.

What I'd like to know is...231 really a clean burning powder.

Unique is just about the dirtiest good shooten accurate powder there is.

Never bought any HP-38 or 231, guess its time I did.

Note: After shooting a big string of Unique loads it really fowled my revolver. But a few rounds of Trail Boss and gas check bullets cleaned the gun up nicely...dang near didn't have to clean the piece.

Loaded to or near maximum load yes W-231 is pretty clean...Light powder charges of W-231 tend to be dirty. Work your particular load up slowly as W-231 can get a bit hot near or at the top...

Uh, I went to look at my own reply and was shocked to find it on a second page which I hadn't even noticed when I posted my first reply. These threads can grow quickly! I found a powder "Olin 231" listed in my 1979 Speer reloading manual. A little more investigation of that book located references to it under the .38 and 9mm loads. Is "Olin 231" the same as "Win 231"?

Thanks for the tips gentlemen!

guiltybutsaved,
Yes, Olin 231 was the old name for Win 231. Olin used to use the Corporate name on their powders just like DuPont did.

44and45,
Yes, W231 really is that clean. When I first started using W231 I thought all the reports of it being a clean powder were wrong until I realized it was the bullet lube that was dirty, not the powder. If you want to see how really clean W231 is compared to Unique load up some jacketed or plated bullets with W231 and after firing them you will have no further doubts.
