I have a sign on the wall in my house that says "When Is The Last Time You Did Something For The First Time?" I still want to do either one of the big shooting schools (Gunsite etc) or a way-out deer or elk hunting trip in the mountains. When it comes to guns/shooting-related experiences, what are you still wanting to try for the first time?

I've always wanted to do one of those hog hunts from a helicopter. I think I've even seen them with full autos. That would be fun. I like hog hunting, and I really like my full auto. Plus, being in a helo without the fear of someone shooting at me at seems like something I would like to try!

I'm 66 now. I'm almost too old to do the "tac school, roll on the ground, run over there and shoot"...all that stuff. All the kind of shooting you cannot do at regular shooting ranges where they won't let you draw from holster, shoot rapid fire...or even move at all.

Yes, thats the thing I'll never get to do for the first time.. When I could do it, I didn't have the money. Now... well, I'd still like to give it a try!

Join a months-long season of competitive shooting. Different scenarios with different weapons each week. Kind of like a not-made-for-tv version of top shot. Of course, id have to acquire on all the different tools necessary for such an endeavour. That would bring its own set of firsts.

Shoot in a large, competitive, practical pistol type match.

I've done a little with classes and with a few smaller matches, but nothing anybody would consider big or major.

I should get on that.

Gunsite now has "seasoned citizen" classes that omit kneeling and prone work:

from https://www.gunsite.com/classes/seasoned-citizen-250-pistol/

Seasoned Citizen 250 Pistol

The Gunsite experience for those of us who have been around a while and have the aches and pains to prove it.

This course covers all points of Gunsite doctrine on marksmanship, gun handling and mindset without all the ups and downs of a regular class. (250 Pistol description can be found here) You will stay upright throughout as there will be no kneeling or prone assumptions. The school drills will have a little extra time alloted to compensate for all the hard miles we’ve racked up over the years.

Do one thing every day that you don't want to do but needs doing

THEN

You can do something - or something else - for the first time.

(Today's task: repairing and refinishing a battered podium for my local library - at my own expense.
Today's challenge: repairing a delaminated 30-pound recurve bow.)

I've been through the regular Gunsite 250 class twice times, and there were some 60 and 70 somethings both times, including some who'd lost a leg and other ailments. They will tell you they are a gun fighting school, not a commando school, and if you are not comfortable getting on the ground, that's fine, and you will still enjoy and learn much from the class.

And many of the instructors and in their 50's and 60's and a few are older as well I believe.

Regardless which class you attend, the are wonderful, professional hosts who will make you feel at home and provide a great experience.

Take Care,

Buzz

Go to a shooting school (like Gunsite), go to the machine gun shoot at Knob Creek, Kentucky, and maybe some day buy a full auto gun (and perhaps a silencer), as well.

I'm 76 years old and done all i want to do gun related. The top item on my bucket list is do an auto rotate in a helicopter at night. I've got one scheduled as soon as the weather cools off a bit. Some say i've lost my mind but i have lots of scare time in a fixed wing and now it's helicopters. (i flew jets in the AF in the '60s)

I hope you get your wish.

Like anything else in aviation, focus and enjoy the "yeehaa" of it all after the maneuver is complete.

eta: I'd love to attend a Gunsite training event, hear a lecture by Massad Ayoob, learn to really run my Vette to it's potential, and take the wife flying with me.

The last one will never happen as she's 180 degrees out from me when it comes to flying.
