Dont laugh, I have a shotgun question, that others my find stupid?

I have a Mossberg maverick 88 in 12 gauge and I have shot nothing through it but bird shot and 00 and 000 ought buckshot , I have a buddy trying to take me hunting but they can only use slug or buckshot, can I shot slug through the gun or do I have to purchase a slug barrel for it, this is the model I bought

Yes, you can shoot slugs through it. The cheap wallmart style foster or brenneke slugs are best for your gun (you almost certainly do not have a "slug barrel", but you don't need one except for expensive saboted slugs, and you probably have a cylnider choke...in other words, no choke).

Practice before you go, and only take shots out to what you can reliably hit (50-75 yds, max).

You do NOT need a rifled barrel to fire slugs. You can get decent hunting accuracy with slugs up to 50-75 yards, IF you practice. Even out of a smoothbore. In fact, DO NOT use buckshot out of a rifled barrel. Those are pretty much only for saboted slugs, which are expensive, and only get you another 50 yards, MAYBE effective range. You will have a donut pattern instead of a nice swiss cheese pattern if you use buckshot out of a rifled barrel.

The poster was merely asking if he could shoot slugs through his smoothbore. He never said anything about his friend trying to make him do so against his judgment, or his friend trying to do ANYTHING other than to take him hunting.

Chuck, there are several parts of the US that only allow hunting with shotguns & slugs/buckshot (depending on the season). THAT is most likely the reason the OP's friends mentioned the shotgun being the only choice. In fact, if it weren't for these regulations, there would be little point in rifled shotgun barrels, and they wouldn't be nearly so popular. You can get MUCH better accuracy, speed, and penetration from a full power rifle cartridge than ANY shotgun slug, barring the shotgun from hell, some guys on THR here have been experienting with (cut down .50 BMG brass firing heavy shotgun slugs).
