I've been shooting handguns for about 9yrs now and consider myself a pretty good shot, but I've never before been able to use both eyes when sighting. I would always end up focusing on the wrong picture or going crosseyed. i've always felt this was a problem as I wear contacts and squinting tends to make them blur.
I was doing my usual nightly dry fire practice at the TV (four rules always observed) and i sudddenly realized I was focusing on the front sight properly and had a good sight picture, but I wasnt closing one eye. I thought maybe it was a fluke so I did some random walking around and quickly bringing up my pistol on target.... still kept both eyes open! I stopped for a show and forgot about it in my boob tube stupor. After the show I picked up my peice again quickly dropprd the mag and racked the slide, brought it up on target (some idiot on reality Tv).... both eyes open! I'm cured! I cant wait to get some ammo this weekend and try it for real.

As long as it's not a rimfire, I dry fire the peepee out of whatever my current carry gun is... You can't beat it for cheap practice.

slow dryfiring n a Glock

This is a dumb question but, there is no way to keep dryfiring a Glock except to keep racking the slide for each shot so as to cock the trigger, right?

I can also sight in with both eyes open without much effort. However, when I tried it while actually firing live ammo it became much more difficult. Maybe you'll have better luck!

Believe it or not I discovered the same thing Thursday afternoon while handling my new Glock and to tell you the truth it surprised me because I'd always used only one eye.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that couldn't do it right of the bat. Havent had a chance to get some more ammo yet, maybe tommorrow i can try it out.

This came sort of naturally for me. I am right handed. When I was a kid I had to start wearing glasses. I am left eye dominant. I had to learn how to shoot rifles and shotguns left handed. Actually it didn't take much. My dad said a person should learn to shoot ambi, just in case the need to would ever arise. Now I'm 44 and shoot ambi. When shooting a pistol or shotgun both eyes are always open, the only time I shut an eye is when shooting a rifle, then I use the eye according to the side that I am shooting.

antediluvianist: You only have to pull the slide back about 1" to get the trigger to reset, you dont have to rack it all the way.

I think the stock sights on the Glock make it a little easier trying to transition to using both eyes open. At least for me anyway. The only other sighting system that I've come across that makes this pretty easy is the Sig type setup with the ball dotting the "I". I'm still trying to adapt this technique to "any" gun. Not easy. Congrats on your success with it.
