What caught my ear, while this story was being reported on TV, was that they were discussing the issue of concealed carry in places that haven't posted signs prohibiting it (although this guy didn't have a ccp). The signage issue is fairly vague in Colorado IIRC.

Man accidentally shoots self at Lafayette hospital

BOULDER COUNTY - A 59-year-old Thornton man faces several misdemeanor charges after his handgun accidentally discharged into his leg while he was reaching into his pocket for money to pay for his meal at a dining room in Good Samaritan-Exempla Hospital in Lafayette on Tuesday.

Steve M. Tapp was cited for unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, reckless endangerment and prohibited use of a firearm, according to Lafayette Police Comm. Mike Battersby.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m., and Tapp, who was shot in the leg with his small-caliber weapon, was the only person injured. He was sent home from the hospital later in the afternoon and is expected to make a full recovery.

"There is no indication at this point in our investigation that would indicate that he was here to do anything other than visit some family members who were already here, receiving care," said Battersby. "We are not looking at this as Mr. Tapp in any way being involved in any kind of criminal act in the hospital."

Hospital spokeswoman Kay Taylor said the hospital has a policy prohibiting anyone bringing firearms into the facility, but admitted there was no prominent signage saying so, at the time of the incident. Coincidentally, however, she said new signs had recently been ordered, including signs that will state the policy clearly.

The distance from the ground-floor cafeteria where the shooting occurred, to the emergency room, is about 200 feet. Taylor said Tapp made that short trip in a hospital wheelchair.

"Certainly, if he had to have an accident, we were thankful we were here to serve him very quickly," Taylor said.

The guy's name had to be Tapp.:)

with the increased prevalence of shall issue states and high quality pocket holsters available on the open market for a fair price, this shouldn't happen. but at least he chose the right place to do it.

+1 jakk... but what I dont get is that if you dont have a LTCF and your carrying, the article said they were misdemeanor charges?
that seems a little off

It astounds me how stupid people can be at times.

1. Do not carry anything in the same pocket as your gun.
2. Use of a pocket holster is highly recommended
3. If a pocket holster is not used (can't imagine why), make sure it is a DA pistol, decocked or with safety on.

I've tried to pull the trigger (unloaded of course) on all of my DA pocket guns with something like a pen and I honestly couldn't do it. You would have to be stupid x10 to have this sort of thing happen to you.

This fellow is lucky it didn't happen in Florida. Unlicensed carry of a firearm is a felony of the third degree here, punishable by five years in prison. Then, when you're done being called "Candy," you can say goodbye to ever owning a gun.

According to the Denver Post, he did not have a permit. He had not obtained any training and had not turned in his paperwork for a CHL. He will likely never get a permit now. I hate these a^$^$hats that have negligent discharges. They make all gunowners look bad. I know they are rare occurrences, but they sure get played up in the news . . .

Just plain stupid. I am wondering if it might have been one of those ultra cheap autos like a Lorcin or such.

It was a Kel Tec P32, he's getting charged with a hand full of misdemeanors

I regularly carry in that hospital. No "signage" to speak of.

In fact, I haven't seen a single "no guns" sign in Colorado since I moved here over a year ago, save for the Broomfield city building which had a "No Open Carry" sign. That one I could deal with...

I was just in Lutheran hospital in Wheat Ridge, CO, on Sunday... as a patient. No one cared that I was carry two pistols, it was never mentioned, the guard didn't mind either.

Seems like a non-issue; he's being charged for the laws he violated, but there's nothing trumped up about being somewhere where there was no legal prohibition against lawful CCW.

Agreed. He's just being charged with discharging a weapon in public, more or less.

As an aside, I move that we continue the spirit of this thread and, from this day forward, refer to any idiot who shoots himself in the leg whilst illegally carrying as having "Plaxico'd himself"

Your name is too common. Mine, however.... ;)

(Already re-writing Jayne's song to my name!)
