after many months of neglect i decided to refinish the stock on my tula .22 rifle. when i purchased it, the previous owner decided to rattle can the stock black without roughing up the finish below which let it flake off like crazy. after scraping it off i found the tip of the stock by the muzzle to be dyed a dark color. I am going to be refinishing the stock with boiled linseed oil, will dying the tip affect the oil in any way?

since the wood is almost white, it should give an interesting effect. and should i do anything else to the wood after applying the oil?

I doubt it will have any effect, but it would depend on whether the black die is soluble in linseed oil.

Might do some careful testing on it first before you slather the oil on and find out the die comes off and stains the rest of the stock & your hands various shades of black.

That page has several formulas.

You can tint the oil if you wish. If the stain on the wood breathes the plain oil will protect it. If it's an oil stain or paint the additional oil might wipe off. If it's oil soluable it might might make it easy to rub the finish off. Test it.

I sanded and refinished a stock with boiled linseed oil. It doesn't darken much. If you hand rub it and generate heat you cause the oil to polymerize and that makes it look very good. I wanted and got a satin finish but with deep highlights.

sanding is coming along slowly, but nicely, using 60 grit to get that Russian Shellac off the stock. heat outside right now is lowing me down, 100 degrees with 95% humidity doesnt motivate you to do any sanding outside for a length of time

Forget the sandpaper. Shellac, Russian or otherwise, is easily removed with denatured alcohol. That'd be rubbing alcohol. Wipe it on, leave it sit for an hour or so and wipe it off.
