Early Pressure Signs with RL17

Just out of curiosity I looked at my Alliant loading manual and it showed a minimum overall length for the 270 WSM and 130 grain Ballistic Tip at 2.820. I think the next step I would do would be to check your powder scales by weighing a 130 grain bullet to see what it weighs. When people are instructing others about maximum loads they always say to start low and work up to the maximum charge. What they are really doing is saying that you need to work up to maximum charge just in case your setup is exceeding the maximum charge listed in the loading manual.
Guess that means they don't want you to jam the bullets in the case any more than 2.820. That's minimum.

It's your Savage Barrel!

I had a M110 left hand action in .30/06.
With factory ammo, it gave the same high pressure signs you are getting, along with higher than expected velocities.
Working up loads using 150gr bullets and IMR4064 I found it topped out at 2.5gr before my other .30/06 rifles.
Some manuals say 52-53gr gives maximum load with velocities of 3,000fps. My Savage topped out at 50.0 and 2,990fps, with a 22"bbl.

I've got a Savage M110 in .300 RemUltraMag, 26"bbl.
Manuals suggest 100.5gr of Retumbo under a 180gr bullet gives 3,300fps. My barrel gets 3,350fps from 98.0gr.

Also, be aware that the Accubond, Accubond LR, and Ballistic SilverTips are quite different animals. The Accubond has a bit thicker jacket which will cause it to run a tad bit more pressure.

I also had a Savage Axis that was sort of the same way. With a Hornady 65gr Vmax, it gave 3,700fps and 1/2" 5-shot groups with 42.5gr of IMR4064. Manuals suggested 3,550 from a 22"bbl.
What causes this in a barrel?
This is what I'm seeing. I'm seeing well over factory and advertised speeds and i'm well below published max loads. Even the factory Winchester Supreme ammo gives me a sticky bolt about 2 rounds out of a box of 20. Now, I have been told that the Winchester Supreme Ammo is loaded hot from factory. I'm not a speed freak. I want it to shoot. I have no problem using less than advertised Max loads and have to back way down as long as it will shoot and I can get close to factory speeds of 3,275 fps. If that's not possible and to get it to shoot I have to live with the 3,000 fps neighborhood, I'll get rid of it and get a straight 270 and I can shoot those speeds with a lot less recoil. I'm going to back it down more for a starting load and work my way up and shoot a ladder to see if i can find a node with the RL17. I'm going to see what I can do to see if it will shoot RL17 and if not, I also have already loaded 10 rounds for a ladder test with RL19. I'm wondering if I should see the same early pressures with all the powders used for the 270 wsm with my setup.

I am late to this party but this is a cartridge I have been using for a while. I am getting great results on game and targets with Sierra 130 gr. GK and RL19. I do not prefer FC brass and would use something different. I would try .030" from the lands to start. I have also shot some fine groups with 140gr. Accubond.
They say Magpro is where it is at, but I have RL19 and the Kimber and Mod. 70 like it.
Underwood Ammo is making some nice loads too.

What causes it?

Tight tolerances, short throats, tight, slightly rough bore.
Mostly good. The bore roughness can be fixed by lapping.

Thank You Sir. I've heard of great speeds with Magpro but some don't have the accuracy they want. I used to shoot gamekings in everything back in the day but never used a rifle with speeds of 3,200 fps and up until I got this Short Mag. One of the reasons I'm reloading this cartridge is because I used the Factory Ballistic Silvertips and twice I've had deer within 125 yds run away to never be seen again after being shot on the shoulder. I did some research and found many to have the same problem of the BST's exploding without much penetration at Magnum speeds. Winchester Supreme 130 grain accubonds were/are hard to find and when you could find them, they wanted your first born child for them. How does the Gamekings hold up at these speeds on deer? I've heard of core/case separation just like the BST's. OF course some love their results on game. Here in Md. on public lands mostly, you hardly ever get that camera pose shot, so I wanted a bullet that would do what I needed it to do no matter where it hits the animal. Sometimes you only get that dead on the shoulder shot.

Do what Weatherby has done for 50+ years.
Use Hornady bullets.
Not the newest, latest, greatest plastic tipped wonders; just the good old pointed soft-point flat base Interlocks.
My first experience with them was in 1974. A buddy of mine bought some and loaded them up in some range pickup Winchester.270 brass. (130gr).
His brand new Ruger M77 shot 3-shot dime size groups. Through the years I've used many different diameter and weights of Interlocks.
For the money, they're impossible to beat, and only exceeded by bulltets costing 4x or more.
I've had excellent results out of Sierra, also. Keep impact speed below 2800fps and they'll do fine. Besides, accuracy is second to none. If it won't shoot Sierra's, it won't shoot. Use the 150's in your .270wssm. 130's would be great out west where ranges run longer, but even out there, the 150's will beat the 130's past 400yds.

Thank You. I will try them. I like Sierra's for accuracy and they did real well out of a couple 270's I've had but i've heard that with speeds exceeding 3,000 fps they explode and come apart. Will the Interlocks handle 3,000 fps and up at 100-200 yds. That's usually my longest shots. I would expect the BST's to hold together better at longer ranges which gives it time to slow down. Thanks for the tip. It's amazing with all the high tech bullets out, I 've never seen any bullet perform better at most all yardages than the good old fashioned Remington Core Lokt's and Sierra Game Kings.

For me, I have shot 3 deer with mine. 375 yds. broadside, 40 yd broadside/slight quartering to, and 100 yd shot straight from behind. The 130 gr. Sierra Gamekings dropped all three immediately. I have high confidence with it.
