Hey everyone,
I posted a similar thread in the "Long Gun Accessories and Optics" forum but I just realized that I should have posted the thread in this forum.

Anywhoo, I have a Mexican Mauser (small ring 98) sporter action that I need to fit a scope base for. I'm pretty sure the front ring has been ground a little bit but not much--most of the crest is visible but some of it is gone. I was told before that any small ring Mauser scope base would fit but I tried some Talley lightweights and the rear base was too tall by about 0.085" or so. I'm still looking around but I'm pretty sure at this point that I will have to modify a base myself to get a good fit.

So I'm wondering if any base/bases in particular are easiest to modify.

Ideas:

1. Talley signature bases, with their flat top and straight dovetails, look like they might be doable. I could get bases for a small ring Mauser and then I'd just have to lower the rear base by 0.085" by taking that much off the top. If I end up having to take the bases to a machinist to remove the appropriate amount of metal from the dovetails then I suppose it isn't the end of the world. It wouldn't be that big a job.

2. Removing metal from the bottom of a base like a Talley lightweight that already has the correct contour. Like I said, I'm weary of this idea but maybe it is doable. I could probably get it close by gluing sandpaper to the receiver bridge where the scope base will go and sanding back and forth with the base. I could rig up some sort of guide to prevent any side-to-side movement. The sandpaper would increase the size of the radius slightly so the base would not fit perfectly after I removed the sandpaper but maybe it'd be close. At that point I could use layout fluid and careful sanding to get complete contact. Would something like this work or would this just turn into a lesson in frustration?

What would you guys do in this situation?

find a pipe with a ridas close to what u need and get the base down with sand paper. u can use jb weld to bed the rear base if not perfect. i put some plastic rap over the action dab on some jb after it has set up some. get the base where it needs to be, let sit over night.
