Matt Halprin
Hello everyone…In mid-August, we will be updating our Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy to place more restrictions around gun-related items. Once these changes take effect, we will prohibit listings of any firearm part that is required for the firing of a gun. This includes items like bullet tips, brass casings and shells, barrels, slides, cylinders, magazines, firing pins, trigger assemblies, etc. Please read the Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy for more details on our current policy.

As you may know, eBay does not allow the listing of any items which are regulated by individual states or the federal government; however, there are still a large number of firearm-related parts that are legal and are widely available in retail stores. These items have also historically been allowed on eBay.

After learning that some items purchased on eBay may have been used in the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April 2007, we felt that revisiting our policies was not only necessary, but the right thing to do. After much consideration, the Trust & Safety policy team – along with our executive leaders at eBay Inc. – have made the decision to further restrict more of these items than federal and state regulations require.

This new update continues to encourage safety among our community members and brings our policies in the U.S. and Canada in closer alignment with our existing policies in other markets around the globe.

Sincerely,

Matt Halprin
Vice President, Trust & Safety

They're certainly free to do as they please, but I don't know that it's a good business idea to totally ban the selling of firearm parts. Maybe we could convince them to allow FFLs to sell firearm parts?

I had no idea that the VT killer used eBay stuff.

Bye bye ebay. Oh yea and say gbye to my PayPal account too since that is owned by ebay.

I had no idea that the VT killer used eBay stuff.

Supposedly he purchased one of the magazines off ebay or something like that. Would be ironic if he purchased his backpack or vest from ebay though....think about it.

Mr. Halprin,
I was quite saddened to read that ebay will be placing even more strict
policies on firearm related items. The policies were already more strict
than laws are. A large number of hobbyists use ebay for things brass casings
and small parts. I don't believe its fair or accurate to say that the
deranged actions of a mad man are going to be influenced either way by
ebay's policies. This only harms the shooting community and further sours
our relationship with ebay and paypal, two companies we already feel
unwelcome doing business with. I encourage you to reconsider this policy in
the future and to be more logical and less reactionary.

Thank you,

Believe me, ebay will still have plenty of listings for all kinds of gun stuff.

Things listed as 'air soft' parts will be there, things listed by their specific part number or nomenclature will be there.

As an example, Ebay has a policy against switchblades--but do a search for "mc-1" and something always comes up. I'm not advocating anyone circumvent their rules and I never have, I am just ammused by the stuff avctually listed anyway if you care to look.

I won't be there, and I don't think anyone should be either.

My problem isn't that there are ways to circumvent the policy (I do it with my PayPal card all the time - 100% of purchases on that are firearm related).

My problem is that they are using the VTech shooting as an excuse to clamp down on their already stricter then regulations require policy.

I hinted at the vest and backpack but if Cho had purchased those at eBay would eBay be restricting the sales of tactical vests and backpacks? No they wouldn't. Since Cho purchased a mag and that made eBay 'ban' sales of many other gun related products then it is a sweeping policy on the class of customers.

Previously working loss prevention I know first hand that many of our phones, pdas, cameras, etc etc that were stolen ended up on eBay. Did eBay ever consider banning sales of personal electronics because of the actions of shop-lifters? Not a chance.

This policy is nothing more than anti-gun politics at the corporate level and this new excuse just proves it. If they don't want my money I'll go somewhere else, they have plenty of competition now.

Everyone that cancels their account as a result of this should drop Mr. Halprin an email to let him know that is why they cancelled.

This is a sad company. I guess that Ebay thinks they are protecting themselves from potential lawsuits by banning all things firearm.

You can be assured that instead of seeing a listing for "Ruger .45 cal magazines" with attached photos, you will see entries like "p90 clips".

Lately there has been too much overpriced trash on there anyway. Does anyone know of a good auction alternative for parts? I do use Numrich and the others for direct ordering, but sometimes you could find deals on ebay.

Does anyone know of a good auction alternative for parts?

This is exactly my question. To be honest, I use ebay for most of my gun type stuff so where else is good to go for ammo and gun parts?
