I suppose you'd have no problem shopping in a store with a "No Carry" sign prominently posted, right? Both policies are anti-gun on their face, but you'd still be willing to give money to people who are actively trying to disarm you?I think the reasoning behind this is stupid and not well thought out, however I will continue to use both Ebay and Paypal as I enjoy their services. I usually buy my gun related items over at Gunbroker anyway but for my other interests Ebay does a fine job.
Why does everyone hate Ebay for doing this? It is their business and we should let the free market decide.
Dear [the law],
Thank you for your recent email to Matt Halprin in regard to changes to
our Firearms, Weapons and Knives policy. He has asked that I review
your email and respond on his behalf.
Let me start by saying that I understand that this is a very
frustrating situation. Before choosing to discontinue use of your eBay and PayPal accounts I hope that you would allow me the opportunity to explain why we have chosen to amend our policy.
Like the rest of the nation, eBay was deeply saddened and shocked by
the events at Virginia Tech and we felt that it was not only appropriate,
but necessary, to revisit our related policies. While nothing purchased
on our site was illegal in any way, we felt compelled to ask ourselves
some tough questions and ensure we do everything possible to provide a
safe and trusted marketplace. After careful consideration, we decided
to expand the scope of our existing policy to specifically restrict any
part that is required for the firing of a gun.
We have always valued an open and transparent marketplace; if items are
legal to buy and sell in an unrestricted manner we allow them on our
site. However, there are some items that while legal, may not be safe
for our marketplace. In these instances, our applicable policies go
beyond the law to ensure that our marketplace is safe.
After careful consideration our executives and our Trust and Safety
team determined, that while legal, any item required to fire a gun has no
place on eBay. All of our policies are under constant review. As the
Internet and the way our communities use the Internet evolves, our
policies and our marketplace must evolve with it. We determined that
this policy change was in the best interest of promoting a safe
marketplace for all members.
I understand your frustration regarding this matter and apologize for
the inconvenience it caused you.
Sincerely,
Terri

No automobiles/parts? No electronics items with FCC radio interference certifications? Nothing with OSHA safety regs? No food items? No cosmetics? No jewelry? As you may know, eBay does not allow the listing of any items which are regulated by individual states or the federal government
Mr. Halprin,
I'm sorry to hear you'll be placing even more strict policies on firearm related items. You're move is reactionary and unecassary. One man does not a world make. Due to your decision, I'll no longer be doing any business with Ebay and my PayPal account will dropped this evening.

At eBay we take the safety of our community and our marketplace very seriously. We have a Trust and Safety team which consists of more than 2,000 experts in online security and safety who are located around the globe. This team is dedicated to ensuring that our marketplace is a safe and trusted place for buyers and sellers to engage in trade.

Terri,
Thank you for your response.
However, the explanation assumes items used in or with firearms to be more dangerous than any other inanimate object. This is a narrow-minded viewpoint and one that seems to be made out of ignorance and concern for liability. A gun is an object, parts for guns are objects and neither are anymore animated than a baseball bat, a car, a bow & arrow, a hammer, a cutlery knife, etc; in the hand of a criminal with intent to do harm. Is Mr. Halprin going to ban all items that are used in any killings? Is Mr. Halprin going to ban all items that could be used as a dangerous object? If not, why not?
Many of us use firearms for hobbies, collecting, defense, sporting and hunting purposes. EBay is discriminating against those of us whom enjoy these practices and assuming that the buying and selling of firearm related items is somehow more dangerous or less than moral, than the buying and selling of any other inanimate object.
It's Mr. Halprin's right to do as he wishes, I understand that and have total respect for it. However, the lack of understanding and assumption made by Mr. Halprin have made my decision not do business with any Ebay owned or operated company, that's my right.
Thank you again for your response
