I've been kicking around the idea of re-coring my 1.625"x8" can for a long while now. It was an early diversified machine kit that came with Ti spacers and six pre-formed freeze plug baffles. Originally it weighed in at 16 oz without the mount. The whole stack was pretty well stuck inside the tube, and I didn't want to try to get them out for fear of damaging the plugs. On top of that, the can was opening the groups from my .308 bolt gun. Finally, I wanted to switch from the YHM mounting system to the Griffin taper system.
Eventually I got around to getting a quote for a re-core from ECCO Machine out in Elizabeth, CO. MachIV runs his SOT making all kinds of neat project guns (9mm semi-auto pack rifle, 1/2 scale AR-15, etc) as well as commercial silencers. He asked a few questions (serviceable or welded stack, intended use, etc) and quoted me $250 for 8 heat treated SS cones with indexing tabs. I figured that was a swinging deal, so I set about pulling the stack out of my can just to make sure he didn't have to. A few hours with a slide hammer and a general disregard for the final condition of my spacers and baffles and I had this:
I bought 2x 30 caliber and 1x .223 caliber minimalist flash hiders from Hahnson Brothers here in Virginia for $65 each, shipped, and the griffin adapter from Diversified Machine. Parts came in less than a week.
Shipped MachIV the tube, end cap, thread adapter, a mount, and the old stack priority mail on Monday the 15th, he had it in hand Wednesday the 17th and asked me if I wanted it Moly coated while it was there ($50)... I figured why not (the VHT had held up OK but was looking rough) and told him to do it in SOCOM Black.
Later on that day (!!!) he sent me a picture of the tube stripped, honed, and the first two baffles turned.
Thursday evening he sent me a picture of the stack finished (not heat treated yet) and the rest of the tube coated in Moly. He even feathered out the vibro-etching I had on the can before I got it laser etched!
Called him up on the phone to run my payment ($250 for the core, $50 for the moly, and $25 for insured signature priority mail) on Friday, he shipped on Saturday.
Today, Monday the 22nd, the can was back in my hands.
Baffles look great with excellent fit between each of them. Molly looked pretty dapper too!& Threw it on my .300blk SBR for fun.
As I mentioned before, the can used to have 6 freeze plug baffles and weighed in at 16 oz when new. Now I have two more baffles, all SS, and only gained 2.6 oz. I figure I shaved 2oz off the gun by going to the griffin mounts from the YHM mounts, so the weight change is a wash.
Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I imagine it will sound much much quieter with proper baffles and more of them.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the service MachIV provides. Considering a stack of 8 SS cups and spacer material probably would have run $250 and then I'd have to pay an SOT to do the work (legally), I came out way ahead.
